Fire at Brazil’s National Museum Threatens Hundreds of Years of History

RIO DE JANEIRO — A fire engulfed the National Museum of Brazil on Sunday night, ravaging the stately, 200-year-old museum in Rio de Janeiro and threatening the years of history encapsulated inside.

Aerial video posted by the television station Globo showed roaring flames and billowing smoke overtaking the large museum. Windows on multiple floors across the museum displayed a burning orange color, and the glow of the fire lit up the dark night sky.

The destruction to the building was significant, and it is unclear whether any historical artifacts had been saved. The museum housed a collection of more than 20 million items, including Egyptian mummies, Greco-Roman artifacts, dinosaur fossils and the oldest human fossil in the region, known as Luzia.

[See what ancient and native artifacts were at risk in the museum.]

Nobody was believed to have been injured in the blaze, which started about 7:30 p.m. local time, when the museum was closed, fire officials said. Several hours later, firefighters were still working to put out the enormous fire.

Michel Temer, the president of Brazil, tweeted that it was “a sad day for all Brazilians.”

Another socialist success story.

When the firemen got there, the hydrants didn't work. Don't they test them on a regular schedule? I guess not.

Eventually they got them going. A bit late.

As cool it is to be in that old building, if you value the contents, you need a state of the art facility.

I read somewhere they were also having problems with water supply problems. They gave no details.

I don’t know much about Brazil. Latin American in general leans that way.

A number of years ago, I was very proud of the Hondurans and how they handled Mel Zelaya. Especially the part that after the legislature (not their term) voted to remove him and the Supreme court supported it, they picked him up in his mansion in his PJ’s and transported him to the other side of the border in Costa Rica. smile.

And it stuck. Later Zelaya sneaked back in the country and holed up in the Brazilian Embassy. Lula helped him do that.

Obama and crowd tried every way they could to get him reinstated. Hondurans refused.

I like Hondurans. Still have friends there that I made back then. Nice people.

Yep. Socialism is where nations go before they commit suicide.

I agree.

The loss of the irreplaceable treasures there bothers me.

Yes, indeed.

It makes you wonder what the real events surrounding the total destruction of the Museum really are. Water system that did not work? neglect? insane arson?

Portuguese language makes it difficult to read the subtle details of the reports. Machine translation is a crippled way to study this.

It will be weeks before the real truth comes out.

This explains a lot...

https://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/02/world/americas/brazil-economy-michel-temer.html

The combination of swerving hard left and pervasive corruption have derailed what should be one of the most promising countries in the world. Crash, and now burn...

As you said, it is truly tragic.

Looks kind of like the White House. Must have looked close to that when the British torched Washington.

My friends, who used to simply adore Bill Clinton, regularly invite me to Brasilian patriot/conservative pages and feeds now. These are people who I thought were lost to the message but I held onto our relationship all the same.

Now they SEE... It has strengthened our friendships. All I have done is point out what will happen. I think it helped them put the pieces together themselves.

I have friend like that in Syria. It has been going on for over 4 years. Honest conversations are very good tools when building trusted friendships.

It has been an education both ways.

The battleground today is truly global, but the Nationalists are the ones who want to step away from Global government. It is the only path that will allow freedom to exist.

Love of Freedom is neither left or right. There are traps all around.

Totalitarianism in all forms is evil.
