In high contrast to nearly every other non-U.S. country, Israel passed a law on Monday that would expand the number of citizens eligible for firearms ownership licenses.
As justification for the new policy, Israel’s Security Minister Gilad Erdan cited increased protection from “lone wolf” terrorist attacks.
“Many civilians saved lives during terror attacks and in an era of ‘lone terrorism.’ The more skilled civilians carrying weapons, the greater the chance of thwarting attacks without casualties and reducing the number of casualties,” Erdan said, according to the Jerusalem Post.
Previously, Israel operated under a system similar to the “good cause” scheme for concealed carry licenses in states like California. Israelis could only purchase a firearm if they worked in an occupation the Public Security Ministry deemed would necessitate one. Civilians could also obtain a license if they lived in areas like the West Bank in which the state had an interest arming certain residents.

Heck I thought most Israeli’s were required to serve 2 mandatory years in the military and that most could field strip an UZI by age 5. lol

True as it goes, but private ownership has until now been heavily restricted; for example, a senior IDF officer upon retirement may purchase his military sidearm, but that is the ONLY handgun he is permitted to own.
And those hot IDF chicks slinging M-4’s over their bikinis are reservists, responsible for their issued weapons.
This is only seventy years late IMO, to allow private handgun licenses, but only for combat veterans (plenty of those in Israel). There is no such thing as a private arms collection in that country. “You want to look at guns, we’ve got arms museums for that” is the response.

BTW, this one issue shows the critical importance of not only the 2nd Amendment, but the correct interpretation and implementation of it. We are moving in the right direction also, but a shift in the political winds will change that in a heartbeat. That’s why it is incredibly important for every single backer of our 2nd Amendment to get out there and VOTE this November to stop the Dems from gaining control of the House - because if they do, there WILL be an impeachment, and all progress on firearms rights (and taxes, trade, deregulation, immigration, defense, judges, etc., etc.) will stop pretty much instantly.

The Uzi is a weapon for girls and really hasn’t been issued (much) in years. In fact, I think it was phased out.

Yes and no. Many, many, if not most, Israelis have an M4 (or whatever) or a pistol in their home — but it is a government-owned weapon.
The key is to stay active in the reserves, and you continue to be issued weapons and ammo.
Actual private ownership of weapons is pretty restricted. When my family lived in Gush Katif, we owned shotguns, as well as our government weapons, permitted by the nature of where we lived. Remington 870s, specifically. No plug. 000 Buck.

The problem with private ownership of weapons is 25% of our population is Arab. They are overwhelmingly nice people. But there are a lot of clunkers in the mix who would undoubtedly suffer from Sudden Jihad Syndrome one day. Christian Arabs only recently started joining the IDF (in fact, I believe it is now mandatory). Muslim Arabs are not required, and seldom, join the IDF.
By limiting civilian firearms issuance and ownership to reservist/retired officers or by geography (e.g., a settlement), we effectively are just keeping guns away from Muslim Arabs.
Cumbersome, but a 2A just would not work in Israel.
