Emerson Poll for U.S. Senate Race in New Mexico
Ballot Access News ^ | August 23, 2018 | Richard Winger

Posted on 08/23/2018 12:33:14 PM PDT by TBP

On August 20, Emerson Polls released a poll for the New Mexico U.S. Senate race. The results: incumbent Democrat Martin Heinrich 39%, Libertarian Gary Johnson 21%, Mick Rich 11%, undecided 30%.

If Johnson does outpoll Rich in November, that will be the first time since 1970 in which a Republican nominee for U.S. Senate placed third in any general election. In 1970 in New York, the Republican nominee, Charles Goodell, placed third behind the Conservative and the Democrat. Also in 1970 in Virginia, the Republican nominee, Ray Garland, placed third behind independent Harry F. Byrd, Jr., and Democrat George Rawlings. Thanks to Clifford Thies for the link.

Heinrich is under 40 percent and there are 30 percent undecided. That screams vulnerable. But will Rich and Johnson cannibalize each other and get Sen. Heimlich re-elected?

"That idiot Johnson will make sure the Dem is re-elected."

Or that idiot Rich will make sure the Dem is re-elected. A Dem or Rep is not entitled to the seat.

In the last Senate election in California, there was not a Republican on the ballot.

Taht’s different. That’s the jungle primary. The article is talking about a general election.

A good piece on the deficiencies of the top-two system:

11% is pathetic. It’s the Pub who is the spoiler here. The Pub should withdraw and the party back Johnson.

New Mexico is no Texas and seems it is more Mexico than America politically.

I know; when I hear the name Mick Rich, I think of Mark Rich who was the international crook pardoned by Bill Clinton (though not many today recognized the name). As for myself, I'm leaning toward Johnson, especially if Rich's poll numbers continue as low.

Completely wrong. In the 2006 Connecticut Senate race, the Republican finished 3rd with 9.6% of the vote behind Joe Lieberman and Ned Lamont.

As a former 2 term Governor of the state, it’s not surprising that Johnson polls how he does. Name recognition is everything. Oh, he also beat an incumbent Democrat to become governor. With 30% undecided, I’d be rooting for Johnson to unseat yet another incumbent.

True, but sad. With all the liberal
movie stars and their money residing
in Santa Fe. Northern NM is as blue
as the ocean. Southern NM, much less
populated, mostly oil field, ranchers,
farmers, is more conservative.

I’m aware of why there was no Republican, due to California’s primary system. However, it is wrong to state that there has been no election without a Republican in the top two. The election in California, even when there are only 2 Democrats on the ballot, is still a general election. It would be better to say that in any election with a Republican on the ballot in the general election, they have not come in 3rd place in many years.

Johnson is a loser causing the election of Democrats. Deal with it.

Funny thing is, I didn’t say anything negative about him in the post you are responding to. You sure know how to make friends.

Traditionally, northern New Mexico votes Democratic. But the large rural, largely poor, Hispanic population, north of Santa Fe with roots back 300-400 years, are much more independent and conservative than the liberal-progressive Democrats residing in the Santa Fe area (AKA San Francisco east). They certainly don’t have much in common with the artsy-fartsy types in Santa Fe. As long as their government benefit checks aren’t threatened, they very well could be in tune with a libertarian like Johnson who wants government regulation out of their use of the land and forests. And, BTW, they all have guns.
