PLAINS, Ga. -- Jimmy Carter finishes his Saturday night dinner, salmon and broccoli casserole on a paper plate, flashes his famous toothy grin and calls playfully to his wife of 72 years, Rosalynn. "C'mon, kid," he says.
She laughs and takes his hand, and they walk carefully through a neighbor's kitchen filled with 1976 campaign buttons, photos of world leaders and a couple of unopened cans of Billy Beer and then out the back door. Three Secret Service agents wait.
They do this just about every weekend in this tiny town where they were born -- he almost 94 years ago, she almost 91. Dinner at their friend Jill Stuckey's house, with plastic Solo cups of ice water and one glass each of bargain-brand chardonnay, then the half-mile walk home to the ranch house they built in 1961.

> Ive never believed Jimmy Carter was a bad or corrupt man. <
Agreed.
To most leftists, every opponent is a monster. I try to avoid that kind of thinking. A liberal can be wrong - and make tragic mistakes - and still be a decent person. Carter seems to be one example of that.
I save my disgust for the truly evil among us. (Yes Hillary, I’m looking at you.)
...must be tough getting by when your net worth is ONLY 7 million...
I feel for them.
How often does Carter vacation in Iran, I’m sure they love him there for his singular effort in creating that humanitarian utopia.
Yes. Carter could easily give $300K speeches to Goldman Sachs and the like, but he does not.
I still respect Harry Truman among nearly all 20th century Presidents because of how he carried himself when out of office.
Dont remember his deadly incompetence and anti-Semitism re: Iran, oil embargo, stagflation, 200+ judicial appointees some still wreaking havoc like R Buzzi Ginsberg today, later ineptitude w\ N. Korea etc.,
Gaze deeply into your shiny WIN button, itll come to you
You nailed it.
Same here. Probably a decent guy, but totally misguided politically.
It is a sham.
He is a multimillionaire who has made his money actively working to destroy the US. If you want to know who the bad guy is in an election just look at who Carter supports. It will be the bloodiest tyrant on the block. The more innocent blood shed and the more crocked the election the faster the grinning monster will be there to defend him.
And to those of you who whine that he is a, "good man just incompetent" please consider for a moment that he did NOTHING ever that was to the benefit of the US while in office. Nothing. A true incompetent will make the right choice on occasion just by sheer chance.
He is BHO without the second term or tan.
Some insights into Jimmys personality. The guy wanted to be liked. He wanted to be popular. He wanted to get elected. He wanted for other people to tell him what a wonderful person he was. He did appear to be gullible and naive. He did teach a Sunday School little kids class. He considered himself to be a politician because in order to be in office and do good deeds he would need to get elected...and therefore he would need to tell people what they wanted to hear. Jimmy was a disappointment...
“I remember it quite well how the soaring interest rates destroyed the home building business.”
It’s funny that you should mention that, because, in a perverse way, Carter actually abetted the construction of our new (at the time) home. We were able to sell our first home and move into a rental. Then we endured a lawsuit from a neighboring property owner where we had purchased property on which to build. As a consequence, when the lawsuit was ended (in our favor), we were faced with 18.5% construction financing. Our banker said to us, “do yo want to wait for cheaper money and have higher construction costs, or do you want to build now with expensive money and lower construction costs?” We chose the latter. At the end of the day, the actual delta in construction financing costs was about $5,000. But building materials and construction labor were rock bottom because no one was building. It was actually one of the best decisions we have ever made, all “thanks to Jimmah!”
It’s good to know that you were able to take advantage of all the guys who were starving and had to work for nothing just to bring something in.
One of the big reasons that we have to deal with the terrorist state of Iran is his dithering, and feckless leaderhip in foreign policy in his early administration.
He wasn’t a bad man, just in over his head. His insistence on being hands on in everything didn’t help.
His policies did not work, but he is devoted Christian; served in us navy; he is good man. his presidency did not damage American institutions in any way. I would have voted for him over obama
Now that hes stopped trying to undermine his successors, I wish him 150 years. Good luck, Mr President. So many of of those who followed you are wicked people. Not you; lack of
Competence is not the equivalent of lack of character

Well said.
For three and a half years, agent John Piasecky was on Carters detail including seven months of driving him in the presidential limousine and Carter never spoke to him, he says. At the same time, Carter tried to project an image of himself as a man of the people by carrying his own luggage when traveling. But that was often for show. When he was a candidate in 1976, Carter would carry his own bags when the press was around but ask the Secret Service to carry them the rest of the time.
Carter would have us carry his luggage from the trunk to the airport, says former Secret Service agent John F. Collins. But that is not our job, and we finally stopped doing it. On one occasion, says Collins, We opened the trunk and shut it, leaving his luggage in the trunk. He was without clothes for two days.
As president, Carter engaged in more ruses involving his luggage.
When he was traveling, he would get on the helicopter and fly to Air Force One at Andrews Air Force Base, says former Secret Service agent Clifford R. Baranowski. He would roll up his sleeves and carry his bag over his shoulder, but it was empty. He wanted people to think he was carrying his own bag.

>>>Carter has been notably quiet about Trump. But on this night, two years into Trump’s term, he was not holding back.
“I think he’s a disaster,” Carter said. “In human rights and taking care of people and treating people equal.”
“The worst is that he is not telling the truth, and that just hurts everything,” Rosalynn said.<<<
Yep. Neither one of the Carters could resist the opportunity to get their Trump-bashing in, could they!
