Illinois manufacturer to lay off 150 workers, move to Mexico
By Associated Press
A storage safe manufacturer is closing two factories in northern Illinois and moving operations to Mexico to counteract the effects of metal tariffs imposed by President Donald Trumps administration.
Stack-on Products will lay off about 150 people at its Wauconda and McHenry plants when they close Oct. 12, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Human resources director Al Fletcher said Tuesday the decision to relocate operations to Juarez, Mexico, was made about two months ago. Thats when Trump announced tariffs on numerous goods and materials from China as well as other countries.
>>>By relocating the remainder of their business south of the border, wont a tariff be imposed on their product?
No. The administration has tended to increase tariffs on raw materials and intermediate goods, like steel and aluminum. It has chosen to avoid tariffs on final goods. So domestic producers face higher costs while producers in China and Mexico are able to get their end product in tariff free.
The laid off workers will get new jobs quickly, by the time this guy moves Trump will have won and tariffs on his goods will make him move back. Take that to the bank.
We need a border tax NOW!
No, aint NAFTA great! /sarcasm
. But if the media, or anyone, thought that it would be nothing but winning then theyre deluding themselves.
Place you bets and live with the results... .
Why an across the board baseline tariff needs to be in place soon.
Thanks I put all four in my folder.
Because you say so? Well thanks for clearing that up for me.
Nice of the paper to assume that's why they are moving. Pukes.
glad to be of service FRiend
“Theyre moving to escape Illinois taxes, but blaming Trump apparently earns them more brownie points with some Lib customer.”
Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense if most of their sales are to gun owners...
On. The. Nosey!!!
no problem. let them hire legal workers there instead of illegal ones here. let all who crave cheap labor go to where the cheap labor is and deal with them in their own countries.
Everything Ive seen thats made by Stack-on is crap. Theres many other products out there that are superior, and made here.
Stack-On gun safes are for keeping small children away from guns. Burglars and teenagers can defeat them in very short amount of time.
I’m a bit perplexed.
Are they moving because they refuse to buy American Made Steel to manufacture their Product?
What is the price difference, even including the Tariff, between Chinese Steel and American Steel? What would the raw material cost be to make a Cabinet, ten bucks at most?
It’s not like Stack On makes 500 pound Gun Safes. They are simply a light duty Metal Box that don’t weigh all that much to begin with. Can you say “convenient excuse”?
:: Thats when Trump announced tariffs on numerous goods and materials from China as well as other countries. ::
Notice no quote-marks? Did Fletcher really say this (I doubt it, being head of HR) or was this made-up...
FAKE NEWS

There are still many reasons to move to Mexico for manufacturing. This isnt about steel tariffs. Illinois taxes, state and federal regulations, and labor shortages are all likely factors.
FYI there is now a tariff on fabricated structural steel products along with raw material. Mexico is the the largest importer. About 500,000 tons/yr.
