Rep. Grace Meng is sponsoring a resolution that would extend the right to vote to U.S. citizens 16 years of age or older.
The New York Democrats resolution, introduced earlier this month, would repeal the 26th Amendment of the Constitution, which currently states the right to vote for citizens who are 18 years of age or older "shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State."
If the resolution is passed, the amendment would instead say the right to vote for citizens who are 16 years of age or older "shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State."
The resolution comes several months after a City Council member in Washington, D.C., Charles Allen (D), introduced legislation that would lower the age to vote in federal and local elections to 16.
At the time, Allen said he proposed the legislation after seeing high school students organize and participate in the March for Our Lives event in D.C. to protest gun violence and demand new gun laws.
The U.S. voting age was last changed in 1971 after a decades-long fight. Proponents of the 26th Amendment argued that any citizen who was old enough to be drafted into the military at age 18 should also be afforded the right to vote.
An act of desperation !!!
I’m not so sure about 25 anymore, based on what I see daily.
The voting age should be raised to 30.
Voters should be property owners, or renters with jobs - they should be the tax paying citizens and not the leeches. Anyone on goober-mint support should not be allowed to vote, since they will always vote to increase their goodies, taking from the producers
The Voter ID amendment
Section 1. : Only citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, shall be authorized and permitted to vote in any national, state, or local election.
Section 1a. : State and local supervision of elections shall require each voter to present valid identification.
Section 2. : The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
I do find it amusing that Democrats argue 20-year-olds are too immature and stupid and that the age to purchase guns needs to be raised to 21, while in their next breath talking about how smart and mature 16-year-olds are and they need to be allowed to vote because America as a whole is in desperate need of their wise input in our elections.
Moat 18 yr old are not educated in the government and how it works, to vote. Most 18 yr old individuals going to public schools have been indoctrinated and not taught the basic subjects on what goes on in the world.
16 to vote? Who is scrounging for votes anywhere they can get them.
These kids doing their “civic duty” in black, trying to say they object to something... of which they do not know... get their passions and anger going on a subject ehey do not understand... it’s a messed up way of life for young brains not yet having any sense.
It’s turned into a way to show their anger... and not get stopped.
If I were in charge, I’d run tha ship so tight there would be no getting out of control or into other’s faces.
That’s also why I’d never drive a school bus.
I just have no patience with kids who think they know it all and are also brats. The new young woman from NY who thinks she is in the catbird seat.... when she talks, she knows nothing. ‘Educated’ and knows nothing.
Democrats unanimously agreed in their own healthcare legislation that people are considered children until the age of 26. The voting age should be changed to 26.
Get them to vote before their brainwashing in the government-run schools begins to wear off.
I think you hit on the right reason, before they realize and find out that socialism sucks big time. Of course this does not imply that republicans have the perfect answer either. But as it stands now they are the lesser of the two evils.
No Representation Without Taxation.
Repeal the ill-conceived 17th Amendment.
The 16th Amendment needs to disappear too.
Liberals sure do like to pigeon hole the usefulness of their demographic groups don't they.
The Kmer Rouge was fun. Lets give teenagers the mechanisms of power while theyre delaying growing up, and are being made more arrogant than previous generations. Thatll go well.
The USA has come a long way from only male landowners voting.
DemocRATS NEXT new chant: “14 or fight!”
Government itself is a lesser but necessary evil. But when people start thinking government is their salvation, it quickly turns into a greater tyrannical one. “The price of freedom is eternal vigilance”—no way can you hear that being taught in today’s public schools.
I would recommend a passing score of no less than 92% on the AMERICAN CIVIC LITERACY TEST.
This combined with an age of 21 and a minimum passing score of 92% on the test should be the absolute requirement in order to exercise the franchise.
And yes, I got a 99% on the test, I missed one of the economics questions.
See Will88’s post. I think he’s addressed the “old enough to fight for his country” argument rather neatly.
