Stacey Abrams is running for governor in Georgia. She would be the first black woman to be elected governor of a state in American history if she were to win the election. But she faces some major roadblocks.
The office of governor was staunchly Democratic in Georgia until Sonny Perdue was elected in 2002. He was reelected in 2006 and was succeeded by another Republican, Gov. Nathan Deal, in 2010.
Abrams wrote an op-ed for Fortune in April, in which she argued her personal debt shouldnt disqualify her from running for governor. She owes more than $227,000 in credit card debt, student loan debt and back taxes. She also owes $178,500 in real estate debt and $4,434 on a car loan (but since those are assets as well as a debt, we havent included it in our breakdown of what she owes).

If she owes back taxes, that should disqualify her also. She would be spending Georgians’ tax money, after all. She should have paid hers.
The reason it counts is because we dont want you to be frivolous with our money
Solid resume for progressives. It used to be she couldn’t run for dog catcher without balance sheet. How did she ever get a mortgage? Oh wait......never mind.
She seems to be well versed in Democrat methods of handling a state’s budget.
She'll fix you right up...you don't have to pay that debt.
Tell ya what...the next time Rachael calls me to tell me that there is nothing wrong with my credit...I'll tell her all about yours.
Expect a phone call, soon.
Stoopid liberal dimocrat.
What kind of dumb ass racks up a $200,000+ credit card bill?
And she wants access to the people of Georgia's tax money?
Typical.
The Jimmy Carter/Bill Clinton/GW Bush loose lending for minorities agenda (CRA)?
Supreme Court Nominee Brett Kavanaugh had built up (and then paid off) large debts buying sports tickets?
= = = = = = = = = = =
Pretty sad if this is ALL they can get on him. Sounds typical and was it a ‘debt’ in the general sense of the word debt...YES, he owed it but using CC and making timely payments may not be the most intelligent way to go but ...
Guess they would rather the teams COMPED all the tickets, then they would have something to complain about.
Mayors and pols etal don’t get those ‘Uh Oh, Front Row’ seats because THEY are paying for them...either the team or the ‘Party’ buys the tickets and issues them.
I ran a ‘Yard for an Asphalt Company’ and the suppliers were always giving me tickets, booze at Christmas etc and yes, it was a perk and probably in the broadest sense a ‘bribe’ to use them, but in essence it was like the ‘PDT’ approach to pols...give to all in case you ‘need’ them in the future.
Funny part of the above is I never met NEW prospective suppliers arriving with arms full of gifts, it was the one I was already using so I guess ‘self-justification’ can fall in place here.??? <: <:
That being said, at least she didn’t empty the regional saving and loan banks like the Bush bunch.
Maybe she should consider running for the 6th district House seat and get the DNC to ante up a few $million.
"Hi, I'm incompetent with my personal finances, you should put me in charge of all executive decisions for the state!!"
I’d slow down Stacy. Running probably won’t be necessary.
I think I would term it a crawl, once this information sinks in.
Brian Kemps new commercial can go something like this.....
I got a big pickup truck so I can drive tax cheats to jail.......yep I actually said it
That is how I read it.
Dangerous road as laws exist to monitor this and only Clinton Syndicate can get away with it.
200,000 at 29.99% interest?
OUCH! That’s 60k in interest a year alone. Somehow I have to believe she is incurring a few late fees and over balance charges too...
She shouldn’t be in Congress, appoint her to the Fed. Reserve.
What’s the minimum payments on 227K???
Doesnt matter. Shes black. Shell get 99% of the Ga black vote...
Wont likely win, but will get nearly every black vote
$77000 in credit card debt; I think if you have Yale Law on your resume they likely wave you through.
So... she’s totally irresponsible with her own money (or credit) and wants a chance at a bigger pot to screw it up, too? Really?
The only flashing red light is the back taxes. With the other debt, I’d want to know more before making a judgement.
What a winner! I don’t fault a person for financial difficulties, but can’t even fathom how someone is allowed to run up such enormous credit card debt. The people of Georgia are so fortunate that she is willing to bring her successful financial acumen into play for them.
