When Donald Trump started running for the Republican nomination for president in June 2015, he began by attacking the Republican establishment in Washington, and he began his attack by calling the establishment "the swamp."
His real target was the permanent government and its enablers in the legal, financial, diplomatic and intelligence communities in Washington. These entities hover around power centers no matter which party is in power. Beneath the swamp, Trump argued, lies the deep state. This is a loose collection of career government officials who operate outside ordinary legal and constitutional frameworks and use the levers of government power to favor their own, affect public policy and stay in power. Though I did not vote for Trump -- I voted for the Libertarian candidate -- a part of me rejoiced at his election because I accepted his often repeated words that he would be a stumbling block to the deep state and he'd drain the swamp.
On Monday night, he rewarded the swamp denizens and deep state outliers by nominating one of their own to the Supreme Court.

True Conservatives do not have a standard personality; nor one style, only; nor the exact same priorities. Nor does it reflect badly on them, that they impress moderates favorably. That ability is a very, very desirable one, if we are ever going to return America to her heritage!
Thomas is now 70 and has been on the Court for 27 years. He likes to travel and speculation is that he would like to retire while he can still enjoy life.
He clearly would only want to be replaced by another conservative textualist. That requires a conservative President and a Republican controlled Senate.
If he retires next summer, then President Trump and a Republican controlled Senate will replace him (assuming that the Republicans hold the Senate this year, which is likely since most of the seats up for re-election are Democrat seats in states that went heavily for Trump).
He does not want to wait until after 2020 and risk a Democrat president being elected. That would put him in the position that Ginsburg and Breyer are in now, stuck 4 or 8 years or longer waiting for another opportunity to retire.
The bottom line is:
Will Kavanaugh be better overall than Kennedy?
If so, he’s a good pick. We can’t afford to let the perfect be the enemy of the good (or however that phrase goes). If he’s an improvement over his predecessor it’s a win for America.
Utter BS. Multiple studies have been done on his rulings and writings and all of the indicate he's more conservative than Roberts, let alone Kennedy.
Some aren't happy unless they are unhappy and have something bitch about.
Nat is upset because Justice-To_be Kavanaugh does not support homosexual special rights and Nat is a homosexual. Nat ALWAYS sides with special rights for homosexuals. Always.
If Thomas has ANY THOUGHTS on retiring I hope he does it NOW, he will be a hard one to replace HOWEVER so was Scalia AND Gorsuch was a one in a million find for Scalia!!!!
Kavanaugh grew up in Bethesda, Maryland and went to Georgetown Prep. I knew his graduating classmates at Prep — mostly a bunch of leftist and RINO Catholics. Kavanaugh hasn’t the pedigree to be a true originalist. Not a chance.
the judge is a libertarian- so his ideology is warped to begin with-
I suspect Kavanaugh will not be approved since it is Prez. Trump’s first pick. I think Trump might be thinking that way and is saving someone in the background once his first pick is denied. Not thinking Kavanaugh is not a good pick, he is, but I think he is doomed by he anti Trump bunch.
I don’t see that happening.
McCain called Kavanaugh a mainstream conservative judge and thinks hes great. Thats enough for anyone who have questions on Kavanaugh. I guarantee you if Amy Comey Barrett had been nominated and traitor
McCain was still in the senate he would not support her and would say shes too extreme to be on the court. McCain is a moderate republican and Kavanaugh is a moderate republican judge and thats why he likes him. Trump caved to the establishment with this pick. Theres a reason so many conservatives had reservations about him before he was selected and still do. As far as Napolitano he meets with Trump regularly and I think he advised him to select Hardiman, who would have sailed through the confirmation.
CLARENCE THOMAS went to a Jesuit school, too.
I have no doubt that Thomas and Kennedy discussed the matter at length and agreed that Kennedy would retire this year and Thomas next year. Both would only want to be replaced by a Republican President and Republican controlled Senate. If Kennedy had not retired this year, then Thomas would have.
The risk of the Democrats retaking the Senate is always there, but is much lower this year than most years simply because most of the Senate seats up for reelection this year are Democrat seats in states that went heavily for Trump. Even if the Democrats manage to take over the House and win lots of state elections (which the Democrats and media expect and I think is doubtful), mathematically it is unlikely that they will pick up a net gain in Senate seats and will most likely end up with a net loss (my guess is a net loss of 3 Senate seats).
I understand his thinking but selfishly, I don't want him to leave. The chances of finding someone more conservative than Thomas AND then getting that person through the confirmation process is basically nil. Even if the Republicans pick up Senate seats this year (and that is likely), the confirmation battle would be brutal for a strong conservative. There are enough squishy Republicans who would likely defect that this battle would be quite uncertain.
Good post. Antonin Scalia wouldn’t have been confirmed by a Senate full of Freepers.
And Judicial Watch.
Nap strident defense of DOJ and the Muller clown show indicates his utter hypocrisy on whining that Trump isn't “Draining the swamp”
He has utterly no problem with the swamp with DOJ and the Muller clown show nonsense. Absurd for him to whine about Kavanugh.
You ignorance is total on Kavauagh. Instead of screaming the same absurd nonsense the Makr Levin and the rest of the Fake “Conservatvie” media screams at you DO SOME research. You could not be more wrong if you tried.
If you agree with Nap, you are an idiot who hasn’t done any research at all on Kavauagh.
