Trump: Obama Allowed Russian Encroachment on Crimea–“I Would Not Have Allowed It”
FinkelBlog ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 07/12/2018 5:07:12 AM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

In his NATO news conference today, President Trump held President Obama responsible for permitting Russia to encroach on Crimea, and said:

“Long before I got here, President Obama allowed that to happen. That was on his watch, not on my watch. People like to say, oh, Crimea but the fact is they built bridges to Crimea; they just opened a big bridge that was started years ago, they built I think a submarine port, substantially added billions of dollars.

“So, that was on Barack Obama’s watch. That was not on Trump’s watch. Would I have allowed it to happen? No, I would not have allowed it to happen.”

The incursion was turned back or ceased.

Putin kept Crimea and the west kept him from Ukraine.

Win win (except of course for those that died in the process)

I don’t have a strong opinion on this matter, but am impressed by the level of knowledge of several of the posters on the thread.

Does anyone know anyone who ever participated in one of these ‘drumming sessions’?

Were they fags?

The world knew Obama was a hologram and a mere TV political phenomenon

Why did China choose when it did to grab every island in the South China Sea and turn them into military bases?

[Putin took Crimea away from the Ukraine. But Crimea was historically part of Russia, and not the Ukraine (the Supreme Soviet of the USSR simply gave Crimea to the Ukraine in 1954).
And today about 65% of Crimeans are Russian. Only about 15% are Ukrainian.
So while it’s important for the US - and the world - to stand up to Putin, Crimea is probably not the place to do it. There’s no obvious “crime” here.
Now, on the other hand, if Putin should move into the Baltic States...]

Poland, Ukraine and the Baltic states have been part of the Russian empire since Catherine the Great. Britain’s control of large chunks of India even preceded Russia’s claims. And yet the Russian claim is somehow held superior to its British counterpart. I think a more honest take would be to say I really, really like the Russians, or I want to appease the Russians because nukes.

Yes. The entire city of Asheville North Carolina is simply an incorporated drum circle. You can smell it from just outside the city limits. Basically the Hippies mope about all day waiting for someone to say “drum circle” and then the entire city closes up shop and sits around banging on pots and crap with no discernible rhythm.

How would he have stopped it?

The easiest way would have been by not supporting the violent overthrow of the democratically elected President of Ukraine.

Next would have been by not recognizing the fascist regime in Kiev and forcing Ukraine to honor its constitution and restore the President to office.

Territorial claims are often a tough call. Not that anyone asked me, but I look at it this way. One, is there validity to the claim? And two, is it worth getting the US into a conflict over that claim?

Take Crimea. The Russian claim on that territory is valid enough - in my mind - that it’s not worth getting the US involved. If Turkey or anyone else wants to get involved, that’s their business.

Now take, say, Estonia. As you noted, Estonia was once part of the Russian Empire. But I don’t see a Russian claim to Estonia as valid. For one thing, most people living there are a separate ethnic group.

So if Putin moves on Estonia, I’d take action. Not with tanks (too risky), but with a strong economic blockade, like was done to apartheid South Africa.

LOL. I moved from Texas to North Carolina in March.

Over the July 4th holiday, I decided to visit the Blue Ridge area. But chose not to visit Asheville for the sort of thing you describe. Kind of the NC version of Austin, TX.

Instead, I visited the small town of Blowing Rock, NC, and it was wonderful.

The Baltic states spend nothing on defense. Not a single country has an interceptor or a tank among them. I think we should let the Russians overrun them as a lesson to NATO members that think membership is some kind of free ride. And I say this knowing that Russia (along with its neighbor and rival, China) has an unspoken ethos of universal empire. We’re not Atlas. It’s OK if we shrug off the burden of being globocop to deliver salutary lessons every now and then.

I am NOT totally convinced the U.S. under any other president at the time was going to go to war over Crimea.

On the other hand, what was and was not done, even in any diplomatic or foreign policy sense by the Obama administration at the time, was in my view related to what I considered Obama’s conviction to surrender U.S. leadership on many issues, to follow and not lead. Obama is a Marxist and embedded with a 1960s U.S. Marxist view that U.S. leading is just U.S. bullying.

Good for him. Put it to the liberals who worshipped at Obama’s feet, a silly, weak man who could not hold a candle to Trump’s energy and patriotism.

Don’t swallow the Russian disinformation and fake election.

Do you personally know anyone from Crimea? The refugee I know says the election with 90% supporting the Russia takeover was a total farce. But a fake election is the Russian way. Read Disinformation by Pacepa, former head of Romanian KGB, for more examples.

When Ukraine vied for Independence, Crimea was NOT included in their Constitution. It was a separate Russian State.

The day after their Constitution was signed, they signed another one....making Crimea part of Ukraine but as an independent entity. Then the idiot leader in Russia told Ukraine...here....take it. Can't see how that would happen leagally.

And Putin didn't just "take" Crimea....the people of Crimea, mostly Russians, voted to cleave to Russia. I believe it is their rightful place.
