WASHINGTON The United States Department of State authorized on Monday the voluntary evacuation of all non-emergency government employees stationed in Haiti and their families due to widespread protests in the country.
The US governments advisory comes after protests erupted in Haiti on Friday after the government decided to hike fuel prices by 37-50 percent, a decision which has since been reversed, but which has failed to quell the protests.
The US government authorized the voluntary departure of non-emergency U.S. government personnel and their families. Right now, the US government has limited ability to provide emergency services to US citizens, the state department said in a travel advisory.
Washington also banned embassy employees from using ATMs, public transport and leaving embassy premises between 1:00 am and 5:00 am, as well as imposing a curfew at night and prohibiting them from visiting establishments without secure parking.
There is currently widespread civil unrest and violent demonstrations in Haiti. Protests, tire burning, and road blockages are frequent and unpredictable, Washington said.

“Haiti is where suburban American kids go on mission trips to get photos of themselves hugging black children.”
I thought they did that in Newark (as part of their high schools’ mandatory “volunteer” work)...

My guess is they got an international flight to MIA.
That’s a little cold! Actually, in the Lower South, a lot of church groups, both Catholic and Protestant, go to Haiti because it’s one of the most wretched places in the universe and needs a huge amount of help, and people know about this because there are Haitian immigrants in the Lower South. Most of the missions are sanitation or health care missions.
Still, the Haitians are hard to love, because they seem to have the worst characteristics of both of their colonial worlds: African and French. And the steady drumbeat of quasi-Marxism sure hasn’t helped.
French colonies uniformly have had difficulty adapting to independence. Note that the Dominican Republic, a former Spanish colony, is on the same island, and while there’s a lot of poverty and the population is also heavily of African descent, they’re light years ahead in terms of being a civilized country. Heck, when you fly across the island, you can see the border of the two countries: the Haitian side is barren and deforested, and the DR side is green and has farms and towns.
Of course, the malevolent influence of the Clintons and their corrupt $$ friendship with Aristide and all of the leftist dictators there certainly hasn’t helped.
But 100% of them cook using some sort of fuel.
And it is mostly not wood especially not in towns where the protests are.
You price the basics out of the reach of people and this is what you get.
Landing ships the size of a French aircraft carrier. 1600 marines, attack aircraft, helicopters, and Ospreys. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America-class_amphibious_assault_ship
Or lthe slightly smaller Tarawa class, with 1700 Marines, anwhere from 4 large landing craft to 44 small ones, helicopters and fighters. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarawa-class_amphibious_assault_ship
That picture is an important aspect of why Haiti will never be a functioning country. It’s a wasteland that wiill take 50 years to recover...
Haiti needs to be re-colonized.
Heres an idea: ship all the illegal border crossers to Haiti.
Re-colonize with trained immigrants!!!
“”The United States Department of State authorized on Monday the voluntary evacuation of all non-emergency government employees stationed in Haiti and their families due to widespread protests in the country.””
What’s our interest there?

True, the topsoils been washed away after everything was picked or cut and burned for survival. Probably will take much longer than 50 years.
Because the French did such a great job the first time? It may need outside administration, but certainly not from the French!
You expect the french to do that?
The french.
Perhaps you should send Hillary! to be their leader. There would be an equally good chance of that happening under her.
The french. Of all people.
That's actually a really good point. Why would they riot over fuel prices if few of them own vehicles?
Same as it is in Venezuela.
They are a nation. We have an Embassy there.
There are only a handful of countries we do not have diplomatic missions in.
Was down there in '52, courtesy of the USN. I had mess cook duty and part of my job was to lower the "clean" garbage (supper leftovers) down to the bumboats alongside.
I had just retrieved a cannister when one of the guys alongside of me says "Geez, willya look at that." One guy in the skiff was chowing down on leftover chicken bones (fried chicken that night) and the other was licking the wrappers that the ice cream bars came in. I was 18 then and thought I had seen poor people in NYC but this was one Helluva education.
Things have gone downhill from then. /s
The fundamental problem with Haiti is that there is too much population for the island to support. If the population were a third of what it currently is they would have a chance to self sustain.
I understand but my question was really WHY? Some nations just do not need our presence at all - IMO. I also understand that we think we need “eyes and ears” all over the world but do we really? A lot of political games are played over that one issue - as in “who” is going to get the appointment of Ambassador; how much have they contributed to certain campaigns etc.? And on the other hand, where would the CIA hang out?
No, the problem is Haiti. Theyve stripped away all the natural resources, they have no industries and a completely ignorant population (since all the good ones have fled) and theyre another one of those Clinton-influenced socialist Caribbean states. There could be only 10 of them left and they wouldnt be able to sustain themselves.
A bit cynical but true. The resident natives have destroyed their own land.
