To: Harmless Teddy Bear

I understand but my question was really WHY? Some nations just do not need our presence at all - IMO. I also understand that we think we need “eyes and ears” all over the world but do we really? A lot of political games are played over that one issue - as in “who” is going to get the appointment of Ambassador; how much have they contributed to certain campaigns etc.? And on the other hand, where would the CIA hang out?

Because you never know when having open diplomatic relations can come in useful. It may be that at some point the fastest route to some where is through their air space when time is of essence. Or you may need to put one of your ships into their harbor to wait for repairs.

Having them know that you considered them beneath your notice can make it uncomfortable when you have to ask them for a little favor.

Always dig your well before you are thirsty.
