Of course a beauty pageant is based on looks. Otherwise, what's the point? Some talk about "objectifying women", but it is possible to admire a woman's beauty and to appreciate her for other qualities, too.

Go on, make it about their written essays instead of costume pageantry.
and they can put them all in a magazine somewhere.
no one “reads” these days.
certainly wouldn’t translate well to television.

It’s like the Superbowl eliminating the game and just going with the halftime festivities and the general partying surrounding the “ex-game”.
i.e. stick a fork in it.
And whoever made the decision to make the change should be replaced, if it even remains an ongoing concern.
I don’t watch football or the Miss America pageant, but I know enough about their history to know what matters for them to remain an ongoing concern.

As one freeper commented a while back, why televise the pageant or have an audience? Just do the whole thing over the phone.

No minimum legal coverings (swimsuits). Parading men who claim to be women.
I just lost interest in the Miss USA/WORLD/Universe contests.
What next? burka-clad women?

"based on looks"?
I thought they were based on tits and ass, that why they wear the bathing suit.

Gretchen welcomes the cultural revolution in our country?
Aging slut bunny regrets being a slut bunny as her looks fade. And that’s part of a ‘cultural revolution’? Oh, brother!

Something is wrong in the head with Gretchen Carlson. She might make a career as Rachel Maddow's understudy after she leaves Miss America in disgrace.

The TV broadcast is of critical importance to the pageant as it generates a significant amount of the organizations revenue. The organization has long been on precarious financial footing, with a net loss of $575,000 in 2016the latest available figureson revenue of $9.8 million, according to federal filings. The last time I even paused on beauty pageant even during channel surfing was probably in the 1980s.
The Miss America Pageant is cutting its own throat. I predict this will be the final year for the broadcast.

They should just end it all at once rather incrementally. That’s where they’re headed anyway.

It’s still a beauty pageant right? They are going to have longer interviews, is it now an intelligence pageant?

replacing them with an extended onstage interview. That's what I want, to see 20 year olds lecturing me on global warming.
Or something like a former Miss Rhode Island said: As Miss America, I would try and bring an end to world hunger. If every person sacrificed one meal a week, there would be enough to feed the whole world!*

Of course a beauty pageant is based on looks. Otherwise, what's the point? What's next? Of course the Boy Scouts is about boys. Otherwise, what's the point?
Seems like a left pattern emerging, all over again.

and replacing them with an extended onstage interview. As if anyone watching is remotely interested in anything they have to say or opine on.
Why don't the organizers just admit they're looking for a liberal to anoint as the winner? The questions tend to be political ones.

Carlson is radicalized. The state pageant leaders, not so much. It is stupid to depart from a successful format.

As if there was any shortage of that.

They get rid of the bikini suit and then men calling themselves women enter the competition.
I never liked Carlson while she was at FOX, and do not like her now.
This is all about looks and looking after themselves. If it were about brains then I would watch a program associated with intelligence.
I have already seen certain winners which were no way close to being beautiful and wold not win a competition in my local neighborhood.
