A few months back, I experienced what a friend of mine and many libertarians and conservative parents say they have experienced: My teenagers started spouting leftist platitudes. Being combative and sarcastic by nature (since all Cubans are born with a sharp tongue), we all ended up angry and frustrated.
Upon subsequent calm reflection, I realized I had accomplished nothing. And so I tried another approach. To my complete surprise, there was a 180-degree turnaround in the teens’ views.
I would now like to share the tactics I used and give the following advice to those who are at wit’s end.

I found a remarkable turn around with my 19 year old right after he graduated high school. I simply told him that his mommy was no longer going to be giving him an allowance, and that if he wanted $$$ for his activities and gas, he would have to make a choice.
Don’t go or get a job and support himself.
Took about 2 weeks of no money and he put it for and got a plumber’s apprenticeship. Now he is starting to be aware of the price of things.... “A new set of tires costs how much!?”
LOL - Wait till he gets his first pay check and gets to see taxes.
A couple of my kids are flagburners.

I was always conservative more or less. Maybe more libertarian in my late teens, but came back to conservative.
Even so, it was still a shock when I had to pay self-employment taxes for the first time. “WHAT?! I have to pay one out of every three paychecks to the government?!”
oh! My step grand daughter is half Russkie and half Guateamalan.( I realize I destroyed that word) She takes after her daddy’s side (brown). She just had a melt down because someone assumed she spoke Spanish.
So next time I see her I say “ Hola, Senorita I’m Offended.” She has been completely indoctrinated at school.
I made a conscious decision to inoculate my son before he was indoctrinated by the public schools.
Me too! Mine came out of college talking about what a nest of socialists it was. He never looked back.
Homeschool. Putting children in public schools (and many private and parochial schools) is child abuse. They are Communist brainwashing camps, with their commandants and guards bent on producing as many Socialist ignoramuses as possible.
King David, Solomon and my parents had those problems. I think also Ronald Reagan and Billy Graham.

No wonder my daughter calls me a jackass all the time. One of her favorite lines is "you don't have to be an a$$hole all the time. You can take a break". She loves me dearly. My son knows everything so he is just smug. I'm working to corrupt my 3 year old grand daughter, much to the consternation of my daughter. I've already got her acting like a sarcastic little smart a$$.
Sad to admit but all they want from me is money!!!!
Of course their mom, my daughter, informed them “the bank is closed!”
I don't think the fact that I’ve never voted or endorsed a democrat ever had an influence on them and they were all born with an incredible amount of common sense !

1. Get out of my House on your 18th Birthday. Do your Laundry at a Laundromat. You can come over for Dinner if your Mother invites you, no showing up at a convenient time.
2. You’re out of the Will. Not a frigging dime. The Money is going to the NRA.
3. Not covering your Health Insurance, even though some idiot Politicians think you should be covered by MY Plan until you’re 26.
4. When the going gets tough, don’t come whining to me, Man (or Woman) up.
5. You can’t take anything with you that I purchased. Charity can put that stuff to better use than you can.
I was always low-key to my children about my politics and even today will quickly change the discussion if politics comes up with them. That was especially hard to do during the 2016 election but I managed to hold my tongue while one of my sons and his girlfriend prattled on about how Bernie Sanders is exactly the kind of president this country needs. I did not rise to the bait and as a result, my son eventually conceded that Trump would at least be better than Hillary (once his beloved Bernie dropped out).
I also tried to keep in mind that I once considered myself a liberal in my youth and remember having quite a row with my father the day after John Lennon was shot. He was calling Lennon a good for nothing hippie commie and I, a big Beatles fan, really got into it with him. (This was just after Reagan was elected). Now, nearly 40 years later, I also consider Lennon a hopeless commie leftist but I'm still sorry he got shot. I kind of liked that "Double Fantasy" album of his (Yoko vocals notwithstanding) and still a fan of Beatles music in general. But yes, his politics stunk.
My sons are grown up now and I'm very satisfied with how they turned out. They are hard workers and self-reliant and as they age, they get less and less strident about their liberal views. I'll let their transformation to being more conservative run its natural course, as it certainly seems to be doing.
Ditto, and on top of that, “if you want to get a liberal arts degree, fine you’re on your own. Make it a stem degree or vocational, we’ll make it happen”. I have one conservative engineer, and one conservative highly qualified machinist now.
Great! Inform them that your inheritance is going to Semper Fi and Fisher House (veterans).
“Military before college...I’ll supplement your tuition benefit—otherwise, you’re on your own”.
Public schools are child abuse. I’ve known far too many really great parents that were up against a tsunami of liberalism in the schools and from their fellow idiot friends.
I’d say getting kids out of the public school indoctrination camps is 75% of the fight to keep kids from being brain dead idiots. Keeping them from too much TV, Internet, and other twisted influences is at least another 15%.
