Shots fired as U.S.-China tariffs take effect in deepening trade row

BEIJING/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. tariffs on $34 billion in Chinese imports took effect as a deadline passed on Friday, and with Beijing having vowed to respond immediately in kind, the world's two biggest economies took a high-stakes turn toward all-out trade conflict.

China's commerce ministry said in a statement shortly after the deadline passed that it was forced to retaliate, meaning $34 billion worth of imported U.S. goods including autos and agricultural products also faced 25 percent tariffs.

"China promised to not fire the first shot, but to defend national core interests and the interests of the people it has no choice but to strike back as necessary," the Commerce Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry called the U.S. actions "a violation of world trade rules" and said that it had "initiated the largest-scale trade war in economic history."

On Thursday, Trump warned that the United States may ultimately target over $500 billion worth of Chinese goods, or roughly the total amount that the United States imported from China last year.

Go Trump.
About darned time, someone stood for America.

It has been an entire generation and a half, since anyone has done this.

Anyone.

Republicans. Democrats. Everyone has been sold out.

Every single person.

About darned time, we had someone in charge who is for America again.

Worth repeating. I was going to post something - but you already said it perfectly.

“China would never start a trade war but if any party resorts to an increase of tariffs then China will take measures in response to protect development interests.”
**********************************************************
Bullcrap! China has been engaging in trade and economic warfare against the US for decades.

So let me get this straight. China has been manipulating it’s currency so we export very little to it. Now it plans to place tariffs on our goods to punish us for doing the same to it’s goods. Of what benefit would that be, when we sell so little to it? 25% import fees on nothing is still nothing. Just how much do they think this will reduce our exports by? LOL

Placing tariffs on their goods when we import so much from China, now there’s a bunch of merchandise that will be impacted. And it’s about time.

The Chinese imported about $130 billion in US goods in 2017. We imported about $505 billion of their goods. Methinks they have the most to lose, and really, the end goal isn’t a trade war. A trade war isn’t even wanted, but it may very well be needed to force the Chinese to trade more equitably with the USA. I don’t actually blame them for looking out for China. I DO blame US politicians for not looking out for the USA—until Trump.

I realized you mean Walmart.

Yes, it will be interesting to see how this affects it’s business model.

Even if it’s prices did go up, it would seem other businesses priced would too. Where push comes to shove, is if manufacturing does come back to the U. S., and Walmart is hit by competition.

Of course it could then source here too.

The trade war will be entirely in the presstitute propaganda.
There will be no trade war in reality. The reality is that negotiations will continue until there is near satisfacton all around

People like to oooh and aaah about American prowess that is now in danger. The change is not the result of a decline in anything American but rather the reconstruction of nations literally destroyed physically and economically by WW II.

We had it good with no competition for 50 years or so. Reconstruction is over. Competition is now the reality.

I remember working at Winn Dixie and frequently buying their apple juice, until I noticed it was made in China, at which point I said WTF! America has apples, too, doesn’t it?

Now...please correct me if I’m wrong.

The Chinese are known as extremely shrewd businessmen, and of course some of their practices are a bit one-sided if not unethical. However when most people in the US take a stroll around their home and look at the little tags on the bottom of most anything they pick up, it says “Made in China”, or some equivalent. If a lot of those items from China suddenly have a 25% tariff doesn’t that mean those costs are passed off to the consumer? Collectively, that amounts to a huge “tax” on a huge percentage of goods bought in most American stores.

The US isn’t in an industrial position to suddenly replace billions of dollars worth of Chinese “junk” with American-made products. People in the US will continue to buy Chinese products because they can’t get them anywhere else. At least not immediately.

How is a 15, 50 or 100 billion dollar tariff hurting China when it is being paid by American consumers?

Yes, America has apples too. Don’t let that secret out though. It might accidentally spur some U. S. jobs.

First off....

Where the heck is the information supportive of this pronouncement? I went on to the .gov website and there are no changes. Where are these thousands of articles on a trade war getting their information on the 500+ articles that are going to have tariffs?

Please can some one give me a link to the list of tariffs? I am really interested to find out what Americans will have to pay more for in the next few years while America tools up some more factories.

Meanwhile...

Interspersed in the tsunami of tariff articles (all without sources, mind you) are a multitude of articles talking about Chinese war preparations. All of which come from unnamed officials, unnamed sources, experts, advisers, and confidential sources. They refer to “secret” memos and studies.

What it is?

After nearly two years of Russia, Russia, Russia? Now it is China China China! Man can’t we ever get a break?

Enough already!

FAKE NEWS FAKE NEWS FAKE NEWS FAKE NEWS FAKE NEWS

Can some freeper please give me a link to the implemented listing of all the 500+ tariffs that are now, according to the articles, placed on China. I cannot find them. I have looked. This list apparently does not exist?

And while I am at it, can someone point to an article that has substance and not developed by a think tank, a analysist, or comprised around an unnamed source...

Thank you.

Free Republic was started, and those of us who have been here from the start has used this as a place to do hard checking and dig into the issues. Now, it just seems that FR has devolved into just another echo chamber that parrots the nonsense that is spoon fed to us though big media.

Post from China, noted.

(really, from China)

Russia basically makes ZERO things which are bought in America. With the possible exception of dolls, and one other thing which I don’t recall at the moment.

China has for the last generation and a half, been taking more, and more, and more businesses from America.

We run the largest trade imbalance with China, in the history of the entire world.

You are a China apologist.

I think.
