BEIJING/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. tariffs on $34 billion in Chinese imports took effect as a deadline passed on Friday, and with Beijing having vowed to respond immediately in kind, the world's two biggest economies took a high-stakes turn toward all-out trade conflict.
China's commerce ministry said in a statement shortly after the deadline passed that it was forced to retaliate, meaning $34 billion worth of imported U.S. goods including autos and agricultural products also faced 25 percent tariffs.
"China promised to not fire the first shot, but to defend national core interests and the interests of the people it has no choice but to strike back as necessary," the Commerce Ministry said in a statement.
The ministry called the U.S. actions "a violation of world trade rules" and said that it had "initiated the largest-scale trade war in economic history."
On Thursday, Trump warned that the United States may ultimately target over $500 billion worth of Chinese goods, or roughly the total amount that the United States imported from China last year.

About darned time, someone stood for America.
It has been an entire generation and a half, since anyone has done this.
Anyone.
Republicans. Democrats. Everyone has been sold out.
Every single person.
About darned time, we had someone in charge who is for America again.
Well apparently it is en vogue to stand up to China now. Even Chuck Schumer is carrying the torch on this issue.
I don’t agree with Schumer with much of anything.
Ever.
But I have noted, that there are some powers among the Democrats, who are receptive to doing something about our trade mess. And a couple of otherwise liberal media powerhouses (The New York Times, and LA Times) also seem to be on board, supporting the president on this issue.
Trump was elected by some of the same voters, who also support some of them.
I think this issue, is why he won. I am completely serious. The GOP was totally sold out. The democrats were totally sold out. The last 3 presidents at least (Obama, sold out. Bush 43, sold out. Clinton, sold out.)
It is about darned time, someone said enough. China cannot just make everything sold in America. It is time to bring businesses back to America.
It is time to build up America once again.
For real.
President Trump has (a) deftly seized the pro-America position, while (b) causing the Democrats to compete with each other and with the craziest of their supporters and fundraisers to out-hate him, and declare that everything he says is evil and everything he advocates is wrong, and stupid.
This leaves the Democrats to run on the idea of promoting the interests of everything that's not American, and everything that's not in the interest of American voters.
Which is obviously why they are trying to import millions of their own voters from around the Third World, which project they will prosecute with a vengeance as soon as they are allowed to get control of any part of the government.
Glad you came back & decided to stick around. I liked your old handle better though!
Best,
Leave it to Reuters/Yahoo are dangerously deranged with hyperbolism.
Us media is dependent on advertixements of Chinese imports.
‘this will be the death of US “news”.
Language!
If someone is supporting American trade interests, I’ll support them, when they are doing that.
Even Schumer.
The other 99% of the time, he’s totally off-base.
Gosh-darn it, you are in mixed company, by gum!
He pushes their buttons even better than Bush 43 did, and that’s saying a lot. Policy, shmolicy. Leftards are cute when they’re turning psychotic, or when their psychosis is showing. Whichever.
The problem is, Schumer is lying.
Just like Democrats running for office say they will not support abortion or Pelosi for Chairman, then when in office turn right around and support what they promised they wouldn’t.
Some Republicans pull that stunt, but ALL democrats do.
Thank you.
We import a lot more of their junk. I do not believe their imports are as trivial as much of ours are. Even their steel tends to be lower grade than it is sold as.
Apparently the article title has changed.
I did not, write that title.
.
Leave it to Reuters/Yahoo are dangerously deranged with hyperbolism.

Exactly. The title literally says “shots fired”. Yet more fake news.
Where did you get that title?
As tariffs strike, China blames U.S. for ‘largest-scale trade war’
True title
That was why I wrote that.
Unless I was somehow confused. I believe I got that from the article when I copied it.
If I somehow was confused, I apologize to everyone (including the authors).
But I believe it was originally the title of the article at the link.
That was the intent when I posted anyway.
