Hardline immigration bill fails in the House

The House on Thursday rejected a hardline immigration bill — introduced by Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) — after leadership postponed a second vote on a compromise measure written with centrists.

The 193-231 vote came a day after President Trump signed an executive order ending the controversial practice of separating children from parents who cross the border illegally.

No Democrats voted in favor of Goodlatte's bill.

House leadership had expressed pessimism on the chances for either Goodlatte’s legislation or a second compromise bill written with centrists, both of which come as the growing crisis at the border dominated headlines.

The hardline measure faced sharp pushback from both Democrats and moderates, who took issue with a number of provisions including its cuts to legal immigration.

Both bills have the support of the administration, whose "zero tolerance" policy toward undocumented immigration has come under bipartisan fire over the separation of migrant families.

The vote effectively killed a discharge petition — introduced by Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-Fla.) in April — that would have circumvented leadership and forced votes on four separate immigration proposals. The bill with the most votes over 218 would have then been sent to the upper chamber.

The discharge petition, backed by moderates Republicans and many Democrats, nearly had its required number of backers, forcing leadership's hand in bringing forth the Thursday votes.

The Goodlatte bill was the only one I considered supporting..The Ryan Bill is PURE GARBAGE..but of course the open border cheap labor express “moderate” Republicans, wouldn’t want to risk losing their gardeners and housekeepers

they are incredibly dumb. bringing huge numbers of Hispanics who vote 70% democrat is not going to help any republican. These idiots are advocating their own extinction all just to betray America.

Looks like the dems are living up to their promise to be obstructionists.

We could use a nice red wave then pass some sweeping new laws to a lot of things starting with immigration, chain migration, the visa lottery, the anchor baby loophole, and shore up merit-based legal immigration. Makes deterrent laws like 2 years at hard labor which offsets the cost for their incarceration for anyone caught entering illegally a second or subsequent time.

both bills were Goodlatte bills. Neither had the wall. The freedom cause withdrew all support. We were lie to in the description of the bill. They told us 25 billion for the wall. That was an absolute lie.
Now we will rely on the clear and unequivocal statement of President Trump that he will close down the government if the wall is not in the September continuing resolution. I am a little worried because he backed down and signed that horrible OMNIBUS bill but his statement was in cement and we want the WALL or nothing!!

The more they obstruct, the better the argument for a red tsunami.

“undocumented immigration”

A weasel word by any other name still means a border jumping invader.

Trump should just close ALL immigration, then, in the name of national security, send the military into build the wall and tell Congress to pound sand.

I’ve had more than enough of those useless, corrupt vermin for one lifetime.

Trump wall funding may fail, too

God help us.

We’re back to the 50-50 vote days where no important measure passes for health care or budget balancing or anything else and Congress sighs with relief and goes on a long recess vacation with a bill tied up in conference or committee or in the Capitol basement wine cellar or anywhere but their responsibility.

Then back to their gated mansions with armed guards and well heeled lobbyists courting them with bribes. Out on the million dollar yacht offshore or fishing in the Gulf of Mexico or relaxing on the beach on the south of Portugal.

What a country.

Old gag on the Get Smart TV show: a vitally important matter had to be solved immediately.
Smart: Get this to Congress and have them act today.
Agent 99:That’ll take 2 weeks to see a vote.
Smart: What if we tell them this is a vitally important emergency to vote on?
Agent 99: Then 6 weeks.

Thank you for the chart. Looks like if the Ryan Bill passes it is just the status quo. They deserve to lose the house if that happens.

“There is a sizeable number of Americans who want an end to illegal aliens traipsing across our border at will.”

Absolutely. That’s why Trump got elected. But it looks like our pretend representatives are only representing themselves.

Best post I have read so far. I am beyond disgusted with our pretend representatives.

From your keyboard to trumps ears! I believe he reads free republic. He pretty much copied us during his campaign. And he certainly needs to continue now!

.
The list of those that voted against the bill will make good campaign fodder for the coming election.

The votors are heavily in favor of the Trump plan.

Matt Gaetz is my kinda congressman. 35 year old freshman from Florida with a head on his shoulders.

"“I will not support legislation offering amnesty to those who have entered our country illegally,” Gaetz said in a statement. “I look forward to supporting legislation to enhance our border security, including the construction of a border wall, and to strengthen our immigration laws.”

Who are the 41 “Republican” quislings who voted AGAINST the Wall?

Is it too late to “primary” them out?
