Now Ed. That's akin to saying descendants from Africans born here in the United States are somehow just simply Americans. Nothing to do with Africa. You know how that'll fly. Perhaps "Indigees"?

I always get a kick out of these 'It's time to ...' articles.

What gives them the right or authority to be the arbiters of things/statements?

It's time to learn a new approach.

I’ve never used the term “Native Americans” so I cannot stop using it. Before we had so many immigrants from Indian I called our Cherokees and Chickasaws “Indians”. Now I sometimes have to say, “American Indians”.

I have never used the term. It always struck me as ridiculous.

There are no Native Americans except for the trees.

The ancestors of all of the people came from other continents.

As far as tribal people go, they can be referred to by their tribe, and that should work well.

In Alaska the native population is referred to as “Alaska Native” by everyone, including Alaska Natives. I don’t see that changing any time soon.

“First Nation” is what the Canadian natives use.

I was in Canada recently, near Banff, at a national park. I was talking with one of their park officials, who mentioned that the term, “First Nation’s people’s” is now the proper terminology. I think I had said, “Canadian Indians” when he corrected me.

The best thing that could happen to “native Americans” is to fully integrate them into society as just regular Americans.

I’ll never forget the news media screw up when, when a black South African visited the USA. The news media referred to him as “An African-American from South Africa.”

Get over it.

I just call em injuns anyway.
Most don’t care, in fact most injuns I know just laugh when I do that.

Yeah you bet! Let’s first get rid of all hyphenated Americans.
I honestly don’t think the “native” label will ever go away. I see “Native Pride” signs and hear about it all the time here in Alaska.

I guess it turns out Elizabeth Warren really is a Native American then - although for a host of other reasons she should still be disqualified.

I never use the term Native American except to describe myself or others I know to be native born.

What to call the Apache, Navajo, Comanche etc?

They are properly termed Aboriginals.

American is a term applied by a group of colonizing settlers and did not incorporate the Aboriginals they found when first settling.

"Native American" is an offensive term, not to the people who it is used to describe

It is indeed an offensive term to many of them. As one explained to me, it's like if Russia invaded and conquered us, renamed the country something like New Russia, and then referred to us officially as Native New Russians.

I’ve been saying this for 20 years! I use the term aboriginal Americans but I also add that even the Injuns are immigrants.
