Erdogan Bans Uber: 'That Business Is Finished'
PJ Media ^ | JUNE 11, 2018 | PHIL BAKER

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the president of Turkey, announced that he’s expelling Uber from Turkey, a result of pressure from Istanbul's taxi industry. Istanbul taxi drivers, numbering more than 17,000, claimed Uber was providing an illegal service and that it needs to be banned.

Ever since Uber began its service in Turkey in 2014, it's caused dissension among the country's taxi drivers, not unlike what's happening elsewhere.

In a speech on Friday, Erdogan said, “This thing called Uber emerged. That business is finished. That does not exist anymore. We have our taxi system.... Where does this come from? It is used in Europe, I do not care about that.... We will decide by ourselves.... No non-taxpayers can do business here.... It is our duty to remove this network, which works illegally in your field.”

Uber had no comment but had noted that 2,000 drivers use the service while another 5,000 work for UberXL, the service that uses vans and SUVs.

Istanbul’s taxi drivers have had a contentious relationship with Uber, taking them to court and accusing the company of hurting their business and operating illegally in the country.

Prime Minister Yıldırım said the taxi drivers should take responsibility for providing better services for users. He called on them to improve the conditions that led customers to prefer to use Uber.

Riders generally prefer Uber and its competitor Lyft to most taxi services because cars are available on demand within minutes, they're less expensive, offer a range of vehicles including SUVs, and allow a cashless transaction.

A camel.

As far as I’m concerned we should have taken the oil fields from Saudi after 9/11 as reparations.

The Las Vegas massacre apparently has Saudi all over it too.

Nice to have a government enforced monopoly that guarantees your investment will increase in value. We just need to regulate every industry that same way and we will all be rich.

Yes, very dangerous, UBER takes cash out of the picture, which makes things a lot safer.

Funny story, was coming back into the city over the Manhattan bridge and saw about 15 empty cabs in front of me refuse to pick up a black guy in front of one of the Federal buildings down there.

So I say screw this, I’m no racist, and I pick him up.

He wants to go to Brooklyn.

We get there, as he is paying me, 2 other blacks run up , put a gun to my head and rob me AND him.

Was pretty wild in NYC in my younger days, had the cops draw on my 3 times and crooks twice.

I’m lucky to still be alive.

Your are not accurately describing the situation.

Not a monopoly, anybody can buy a medallion.

A communist changed the rules in the middle of the game and wiped out these peoples investment (a lot of whom are poor legal immigrants or second generation)

That’s wrong ethically and morally.

Uber is not a monopolist. The riders like Uber, and the drivers don’t think their wages are too low to stop working for them. So why don’t you stop playing socialist and allow consenting adults to make their own bargains?

Cops drawing on you? Not good. In the wild days of NYC, that took a lot! But I have a lot of sympathy for you cab drivers. I remember standing across from Grand Central and (a black) guy ran up to the driver and stole his wallet out of his hand and was gone in an instant. My husband was lucky. His worst experience was taking a drugged Faye Dunaway to a diner on 11th Avenue when she was too out of it to pay him.

Uber drivers have it tough too. I hate that company.

I respect all drivers - they provide an amazing service and need to be compensated.

Uber is or was one of the few tech companies that seemed to consciously eschew SJW virtue signaling, at least until their first CEO was tossed precisely because everybody was enraged over this.

DiBlasio should have made UBER BUY a medallion at full price for every car they put on the street.

He probably got a huge payoff for selling out the medallion owners.

...

Didn’t Uber use lawsuits or the threat of lawsuits to get into markets?

Uber seems like it might be OK for a short term cash flow issue.

By the time your time and the car’s full expenses are apportioned, it seems like maybe break even at best.

I advise you to go to Uber forums of the drivers. They will disabuse you of the notion that their wages are high and work conditions are terrific. It stinks for the “non-employees.”

Yes, I would say my husband broke even. He made absolutely nothing working 8 hour shifts after dark. They constantly pushed him to work holidays - which he did - but he spent most of the time sitting in his car reading a book waiting for a call that never came. Too many drivers on the road. Now that’s great for customers, I admit, but bad for the poor slob driving the car.

That’s a clever way of stating it. Anyone can buy one but you failed to mention NYC only issued a limited amount. They peaked at about $1.3 mil in value. That is a government enforced crony system and it was rightfully overthrown. If you live by government fiat you die by government fiat.

The medallion system is as ethically and morally wrong so trashing it could not be wrong.

Never said they were a monopoly.

As far as drivers, in Miami most of the UBER drivers are illegal aliens that can barely drive a car, much less should be allowed to drive people around.

These drivers typically last a couple of months, they pay no income taxes and cant get jobs at most legal businesses.

I went through the process and am an active UBER driver, have never actually picked up any passengers because I don’t need an extra 8 bucks an hour, was just curious to check out their operation.

The UBER Greenway in Miami has 90% Spanish only speaking drivers.

Most recently escaped from Venezuela, or Cuba.

The Miami branch owner had his RR parked in the back and had the door open, very cool red leather.

They are predatory and are smart enough not to mix politics and business.

The LV Massacre is just another nail in the Saudi coffin.

They will pay eventually, thought Trump would put them to the sword, but apparently they are necessary to fend off Iran.
