Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the president of Turkey, announced that hes expelling Uber from Turkey, a result of pressure from Istanbul's taxi industry. Istanbul taxi drivers, numbering more than 17,000, claimed Uber was providing an illegal service and that it needs to be banned.
Ever since Uber began its service in Turkey in 2014, it's caused dissension among the country's taxi drivers, not unlike what's happening elsewhere.
In a speech on Friday, Erdogan said, This thing called Uber emerged. That business is finished. That does not exist anymore. We have our taxi system.... Where does this come from? It is used in Europe, I do not care about that.... We will decide by ourselves.... No non-taxpayers can do business here.... It is our duty to remove this network, which works illegally in your field.
Uber had no comment but had noted that 2,000 drivers use the service while another 5,000 work for UberXL, the service that uses vans and SUVs.
Istanbuls taxi drivers have had a contentious relationship with Uber, taking them to court and accusing the company of hurting their business and operating illegally in the country.
Prime Minister Yıldırım said the taxi drivers should take responsibility for providing better services for users. He called on them to improve the conditions that led customers to prefer to use Uber.
Riders generally prefer Uber and its competitor Lyft to most taxi services because cars are available on demand within minutes, they're less expensive, offer a range of vehicles including SUVs, and allow a cashless transaction.

Well, aren’t most taxi drivers Muzzies anyway?
Turkish Leader on Rumors of Second Coup Attempt: No Traitors Will Be Left Alive
Got ripped off more then once by cabbies in Istanbul.
Not a fan of Erdogans islamism, but he sure does know how to deal with domestic enemies.
The communist Diblasio lets UBER roll in and financially destroy the NYC Taxi Industry.
I used to drive a yellow in NYC, and when I drove there were very few whites, mostly muslims, blacks, and Haitians.
I’m an Uber driver here in Kentucky. Guess I’ll never be offering my services abroad.
That will sit well around here.
If you offered your services in Turkey that would make you a globalist
I’m sure they are all dishonest scum, but where the hell does UBER get off thinking they need to branch out to Turkey?
Apparently they haven’t destroyed enough cab drivers lives, we should all be working for them for slave wages?.
Bollocks to that.
I read that in the Post. Sad. That taxi commission stuff is out of the past.
On the other hand, I don’t get working for Uber. My husband did after we had a financial collapse and all he got out of it was our fender completely destroyed by a deer. The money was total peanuts.
Cool, I bet you are doing pretty good, was there a lot of cabs in your part of Kentucky before Uber came in?
Sorry. I like the service and convince of Uber.
Use it whenever I can.
When I drove a yellow we could pick up anywhere in the city, car services, gypsy cabs, and black cars had rules that kept the value of the yellow medallion stable and growing.
Car services could not pick up in Manhattan, Black Cars were for rich people, and Gypsy cabs could pick up north of 125 St and the outer boroughs.
DiBlasio should have made UBER BUY a medallion at full price for every car they put on the street.
He probably got a huge payoff for selling out the medallion owners.
One man rule.
Classic “strong man”
I found a Greek taxi driver in NYC, born and raised there. His family spent $650,000 to buy a NYC taxi medallion in ~2010. He was great to work with.
So is the crime in Turkey driving an Uber without paying off city officials, or competing against the local taxi drivers and officials that run a black market economy?
I like cab drivers. When my husband was a young actor, he drove a yellow cab in Manhattan as well. Very dangerous job.
What would MoHAMmad drive?
Both, and is doesn't help that UBER was founded by Jews, the islamics are not fond of them at all.
When I drove, medallions were worth about 90-100 grand.
Getting ripped off by cab drivers in the third world is a BIG problem and is one of the main reasons UBER is growing like crazy.
What I take exception to is them coming into an established market and and putting everyone else out of business without compensating them.
He knows how to deal with people that plot against him and perpetrate a coup, that’s for sure.
