German magazine Wirtschaftswoche said U.S. President Donald Trump aimed to push German carmakers out of the United States, and that he told French President Emmanuel Macron he wanted to stop Mercedes-Benz from cruising through New York.
German carmakers control 90 percent of the U.S. premium auto market, with BMW owning the Rolls-Royce and BMW brands while Daimler has Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen controls Bentley, Bugatti, Porsche and Audi.
The Trump administration has opened a trade investigation into whether vehicle imports have damaged the U.S. auto industry.
Citing several unnamed European and U.S. diplomats, the magazine said on Thursday that he told Macron in April he would stick to his trade policy for long enough until no Mercedes-Benz models were rolling down New Yorks Fifth Avenue.
Within the EU, Germany is the biggest exporter of cars to the United States.EU passenger car imports from the United States were worth 6.2 billion euros (5.5 billion pounds) last year, while the blocs U.S. exports topped 37 billion euros, according to Brussels-based industry association ACEA.
German automakers assembled 804,000 cars in U.S. plants last year but exported another 657,000 to North America from Germany, according to the VDA industry association.
Berlin has also reacted angrily to a U.S. vehicle imports investigation, which could lead to tariffs of up to 25 percent

Love the WW2 planes! Mustang and B-17 are awesome.
My favorite is the FM-2 Wildcat. Not top of the line, but such a nice plane, perfectly adapted to the small aircraft carriers.
I smell varmint poontang ...
As one of the British pilots said, he’d rather dogfight in a Spitfire over Berlin, but if he were in a Spitfire, he wouldn’t get back to England.
Mustangs had the range as well as the outstanding performance.
crap. I own an MB S series, after ditching my C class. But if it’s for Trump, I may consider it.
BMW owns the BMW brand?
Wow, that’s news to me!
So pushing for fair trade means pushing German car makers out of the USA huh.
Someone needs to get a better translator.
I’m a VW fan. Love VW’s. REAL VW’s. The ones that use water only in the windshield washer. I have a 69 Beetle.
In 2008 I bought a New Beetle. In 18 months it went in the shop EIGHT times for warranty repair. First one was at six months for a new A/C compressor. At that time the New Beetles were built in Mexico, and I must have gotten one assembled on Cinco De Mayo.
I still have the 69, but my other vehicles are a Nissan and a Honda.
On my 5th Bimmer, had two go over 200,000 w/o any significant issues. The newer ones aren't as reliable....too much crap on them.
Folks in the price range of German luxury cars can afford to pay more. If they choose to do so, or not, it’s no skin off MY nose!
It can be pricey to maintain - but it's a BMW. Duh.
..... Or have them manufacture here and create more American Jobs to get around the tariffs.
I had a ‘64, red, with a rack on top and tha back seat removed for stuff. We were moving from DC to Manila and carried as much as it would hold.
On an 11 mile straight strech of desolate but dead flat road in Wyoming, another Beetle also going flat out tried to pass. It took him at least two miles. My roof rack gave him the edge.
In those days, the top speed was 72. A big Chevy could easily out run the VW. However, the chevy’s poked around until the VW passed it. That was outrageous and could not stand. The Chevy came to life and blew past.
That happened all the time
I paid $1800 and sold it in Manila after three years for $1200 and bought a new blue WV wagon delivered in Burlingame. It lasted 10 years.
Ha Ha Ha Ha!! Good one!

Too bad the P51 had to use a fibrillator to get it going ... :)
Full disclosure: my dad was a Jug pilot in WWII and jets after.
I would not mess with President Cyrus, especially if he’s intimating push back
Our very own Senator Bob corker arranged $$$MILLIONS in enticements for VW to build a plant in Chattanooga...
less than 2,000 local people got hired...
top management was brought from Germany along with their families whom we have to educate etc...
Thanks Bob...
To every country complaining, Trump should simply state that we will impose a tariff that is the same as the one they charge us. That will resonate with Americans, even if the EU and talking heads call it a trade war. The globalists don’t have any cards to play—they don’t buy much of our stuff, and if we stop buying theirs, they go out of business. We get along just fine.
He doesn’t want to push them out. He wants to bring their manufacturing in.
We’re on our 5th BMW in 15 years. If anything, the cars keep getting better and better. Zero quality issues.
Sounds like you turn them in every 3? That’s why?
