Trump wants to push German carmakers out of U.S. - German magazine....

German magazine Wirtschaftswoche said U.S. President Donald Trump aimed to push German carmakers out of the United States, and that he told French President Emmanuel Macron he wanted to stop Mercedes-Benz from cruising through New York.

German carmakers control 90 percent of the U.S. premium auto market, with BMW owning the Rolls-Royce and BMW brands while Daimler has Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen controls Bentley, Bugatti, Porsche and Audi.

The Trump administration has opened a trade investigation into whether vehicle imports have damaged the U.S. auto industry.

Citing several unnamed European and U.S. diplomats, the magazine said on Thursday that he told Macron in April he would stick to his trade policy for long enough until no Mercedes-Benz models were rolling down New York’s Fifth Avenue.

Within the EU, Germany is the biggest exporter of cars to the United States.EU passenger car imports from the United States were worth 6.2 billion euros (5.5 billion pounds) last year, while the bloc’s U.S. exports topped 37 billion euros, according to Brussels-based industry association ACEA.

German automakers assembled 804,000 cars in U.S. plants last year but exported another 657,000 to North America from Germany, according to the VDA industry association.

Berlin has also reacted angrily to a U.S. vehicle imports investigation, which could lead to tariffs of up to 25 percent

Why do I feel this designed and timed specifically to encourage Italy in its potential revolt against the EU/Brussels and their masters in Germany?

I have to say, the quality of BMW’s has really declined as the prices have skyrocketed. They force you to spend an extra $500 on 4 tires because they can’t engineer a spare tire compartment. I’ve had electronic tire pressure monitors fail and cause the total car electronics to fail - terrible. Not sure if the 3 series will remain a perennial Car and Driver Top 10 if they don’t focus on quality again.
It may be nice handling, but they need to last past 60,000 without major failures.

He doesn’t. He just wants an even playing field for US manufacturing.

BMW, Mercedes, and Volkswagen all have manufacturing plants in the U.S. Many, and in some cases all, of the cars of a specific model sold in the U.S. are made here. How would Trump ban them from the U.S. market? Force the factories to close?

I doubt the accuracy of this story.

“Rolls-Royce engines in the Spitfire. “

Now that BMW has the “Merlin Technology,” they can start building “MesserSpits!”

Nothing sounds like a Merlin. This past weekend one of our neighbors here had his P-51 out giving rides in observance of Memorial Day. We also had a B-17 lumbering back and forth between Livermore and Concord giving “rides!”

Ah, both BMW and Mercedes-Benz have major assembly line operations in the USA. And they are building “crossover” SUV’s, which has highly profitable to both companies.
