HONOLULU — Damage to the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu was worse than expected and it will remain closed indefinitely, officials said.
Boat transportation to the attraction was suspended May 6 after one of the vessel operators noticed a crack on the outside of the memorial, Hawaii News Now reported .
Tourists were allowed to disembark at the memorial after crews completed interim repairs. But the cracks reappeared hours later, indicating a more serious issue.

As the steel corrodes away and the ship deforms/slumps under it’s own weight the steel is hardened due to long term fatigue. Hardened steel is getting more brittle while the ship wants to deform ever more. The same phenomia happens to really old steel bridges (40 years plus). When you weld a crack in brittle steel, the weld is much stronger then the base material, an adjacent crack propagates.
It lasted the lifetime of most all of the WWII veterans which is something to appreciate.
Nearby on Waipio peninsula. We were doing some testin g over there and I was able to walk up to the pile of debris. Gazillion rivets in huge chunks of rusting iron. Nothing recognizable, it was not a neatly arranged thing.
From Google Earth, it looks like they have cordoned the area off now. Was not because of me!
The USS Utah’s remains are on the other side of Ford Island.
I would wonder if the closing is actually due to the threat posed by the ships weight collapsing against the colomns supporting the walkway above the ship? That’s the only reason I can think of for such a closure, risk to life. If that’s the case, it’s just an engineering problem to solve. Removing the existing walkway and replacing it with something supported differently. One-two years in design and construction.
Consider, the belt armor on the Arizona is 13 inch thick solid steel. Imagine the side of the ship falling away against one of the columns of the existing walkway?
I’d bet that’s the issue.
The ex-USS Utah is directly across Ford Island from the Arizona. The guns had been removed and the ship re-designated AG-16 (no name) after the Washington Naval Treaty went into effect. They would sail it out of the harbor for aerial bombing practice (with inert bombs). 46 were killed when she went down. Attempts to salvage her, a la the Oklahoma, were not successful, and she still lies where she was when the attempts were abandoned. You can see traces on Google Maps.

She has been down there a long time now. The ocean’s salt water, etc. have taken their toll on her, plus the damages from the attack. I figured one day she would probably collapse.

Only discovered the nest at the front door on Shavous, already built, occupied and containing three eggs. The whole scene showed up out of nowhere, but that's only because we were oblivious to its construction. The birds flying in and out just blended in with Springtime activity.

It didn't occur to me to name Tzippi's husband, but obviously Tzippi's husband is Moshe. He's been doing such a great job - standing guard, and also now helping to feed the new babes. I can watch all of this from the front door window. The nest is only ~5 ft away, in plain sight.

I look at it this way: why would anyone need or want to visit her grave after she came back to life? The grieving has ended. Tomorrow is Memorial Day.

The docking area doesn’t look all that sturdy.
It might be designed to break away if a boat hits it too hard or from a strong storm.
