GOP seeks farm bill support amid immigration debate House Freedom Caucus members are trying to flex some muscle on immigration in exchange for support on the farm bill;
A sprawling and subsidy-packed farm bill that also would have tightened food stamp rules failed in the House on Friday, in a dramatic defeat for GOP leaders who faced an uprising from conservatives over inaction on immigration.
The farm bill, which was voted down 213-198, had been hanging in the balance as the conservative House Freedom Caucus threatened to withhold support without an agreement on an immigration bill vote.
The GOP leadership, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., and Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., were seen in intense discussions with the conservative lawmakers in the minutes before the vote.
Republican Congressman Dave Bratt weighs in on brewing battle over immigration bills in Congress. At least 30 Republicans voted against the bill, while all Democratis opposed it -- enough to doom the legislation. Ryan then took steps to call for a revote in the future, but it's not clear when the measure might be revived.
“We experienced a setback today after a streak of victories all week," said House Agriculture Committee Chairman Michael Conaway, R-Texas. "We may be down, but we are not out."
Conway predicted the House will "deliver a strong, new farm bill on time as the president of the United States has called on us to do."
Before the farm bill failed, the freedom caucus had called for a vote on a conservative bill that would boost border security and support the construction of a wall, among other changes. GOP leaders had offered for the House to consider the measure in June in exchange for support on the farm package, a deal the conservatives rejected.

What constitutional authority does Congress have to decide what goes on on farms around the country?
My guess is they use the commerce clause, but who knows?

Then you have those Midwestern assclowns in the senate, like Deb Fischer, who, while voting against a 1.3 trillion omnibus spending bill, of which 75% funds our emaciated military, will then advocate and vote for a TRILLION dollar “farm bill” - of which 85% is food-stamp welfare for the coastal libtards, and 25% price-fixing guarantees for FDR-indoctrinated socialists of the Midwest ... those “saintly” farmers, who can’t seem to free their effing ethanol-subsidized lips off the government tit.
Can we just cut all subsidies for Ethanol and use it to drill off San Francisco?

Price supports for farm products does seem to benefit agri-conglomerates a lot more than it does farmers.
Also RINOs voted against it because of the work reaquirement for food stamps.
Thery may come back with a nill w/o that and get Dem votes. That would be a disaster, but you never know with these guys.
Here in my part of the Buckeye state, it’s the time of year when traffic gets slowed down as tractors with huge disc attachments or seeders move slowly down the country road.
It’s a pure gamble for them sometimes, because government control doesn’t stabilize the risk they take at all. Corn has gone from bounced from less than 3 to as high as 9 in the last few years. How do you deal with that so called government market?
I would trade all that for a wall with high tech sensors, e-verify, an end to chain migration, and more border agents.
The farm bill should be split into two separate, stand-alone bills.
Let them justify the welfare portion for the coastal, lazy-ass, unwed libtards, who pop out babies like pop-tarts so to suck more money out of working Americans.
Then let them justify the price-fixing welfare for the FDR-indoctrinated jackass farmers, who, even after getting subsidy after subsidy for the ethanol scam they’ve rammed down our throats year after year, then have the gaul to demand guaranteed ROIs for their crops. Funny how nobody guarantees my income, or that of any other American worker.
Oh, but farmers - they’re “special.” A cabal of government-tit sucking leaches is what they truly are. I can grow my own food cheaper - without all the pesticide and herbicide contaminants; and I sure as hell don’t need to be extorted by the Midwest FDR-socialists!

I honestly think they should cease calling it a ‘farm bill’ immediately. Most equate the ‘farm bill’ with farm subsidies when it is about 80% a food stamp/welfare bill. You can hardly blame this on agricultural states!
Many of the farmers around me are beneficiaries of federal farm subsidies and other government goodies. They get numerous tax breaks, both at the state and local level. We have water issues with the Ogallala aquifer, including legal issues with Kansas, yet these dumbasses continue to drill more irrigation pivot wells for the ethanol corn they grow. These people are stupid beyond description. Most Americans believe that farmers are all chalk-full of common sense insight. That’s BS!
Most of the ones I’ve met are self-centered jerks, who think themselves God’s gift to humanity, and therefore deserving of all manner of special treatment - while they simultaneously bitch about the welfare state! The ironic hypocrisy of their position escapes them in the most stunning display of cognitive dissonance I have ever witnessed!
If you ever have a discussion about this with a Nebraska corn farmer, you will discover they are all in for this crap - as long as they continue to get their price-fixing guarantee as part of the deal. So, yes, I sure as hell can and do blame the AG states. Because it’s a general mentality, instilled in them by FDR, and persisting over generations, that farmers are deserving of some special consideration which no other American worker is availed. Nobody guarantees my wage. If farmers cannot accept the risk of their chosen vocation, then they need to get the hell out of it. I’m tired of subsidizing their livelihood.
