I wanted to ask the best and brightest group of people what are/were the best lessons their moms taught them through life. My own Mom went home to God over 21 years ago and now as the mom of my own 9 year old daughter I want to make sure I teach her the important lessons in life. I'm trying to instill a love of God, family, friends, and nature in her while making her independent, hard working, generous, and strong. Would ya'll please share some insights/lessons for me??
The Bible.
It’s God’s Instruction Manual.....................
Teach her to be kind.
Clean up your room.
My mom always told me, “When you walk into a room, walk in like you own the joint.” She did just that and I saw it on numerous occasions. She’d walk through the door and heads stared turning asking, “Who’s that?” She had a natural magnetism... and a bad drinking problem which eventually killed her... which brings me to the second thing shoe taught me: Alcohol is evil. If you give it a foothold it will kill you eventually. I’m not saying I don’t drink because I do, but I have set some pretty strict limits on how much a drink when I decide to.
Be nice to liberals. But do not vote for them.
Given the misspellings in my post, I would like to state for the record, that I am NOT drinking right now. Just thought I’d clear that up before folks started talking.
“When in doubt, don’t do it.”
Respect / sympathy for animals
I made my kids understand $ early on. If I was going to buy them clothe etc and they wanted something better they had to pay the difference. It made them think about their choices and they became selective. Once they were near car driving age I said yes I’ll take care of everything but their insurance money. They both started working at 15 so that they could be ready to start their driving experiences at 16. Both are now hard working Tax paying upright citizens who both now own their own homes and autos.
When I would complain about her discipline tactics to correct any of my bad behavior, etc. she would retort:
"Listen, if I didn't love you so much, I wouldn't care and would let you do as you please. But I do and I will do what is necessary to make sure you learn responsibility and right from wrong."
How to read. At a very early age.
If you watch the pennies, the dollars take care of themselves.
In the fifties and sixties the schools would always ask the students about their heritage. My mother, being of German ancestry would always say when they ask you where you’re ancestors are from, refuse to answer and tell them you are an American. She said when they moved here they gave up their homeland to be American and that was that.
Since she had to fight for her citizenship she was always very pro-American even when it wasn't easy or cool at times. She taught us that God, family and love of country, in that order, were the core values of life.
When we got new assignments, we always traveled as a family even though it caused great financial stress at times. Later, when I enlisted in the USAF I also carried those values forward. I don't think she or I would have changed anything. It works.
Nothing verbal or overt... it was always her example.
Quiet, regal and honest.
My mom taught by example how not to be. It was a hard school, but I came to the Lord because of it, so all’s well that ends well.
Respect for the unborn.
Stop the abortion.
Love God, and everything else will fall into place.
Her best advice was to not post vanities.
