Connecticut’s legislature has passed a bill that would give the state’s Electoral College votes to the presidential candidate who wins the popular vote nationally.

The state Senate voted 21-14 on Saturday to join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, which includes 10 states and the District of Columbia. The state House passed the measure last week, 77 to 73.

r. States can direct their electors to vote by any means.

The Constitution also states that the states are to have a republican form of government (e.g. no state could have a konarchy for state issues). Having an outside measure that is possibly unverifiable before the EC meets could well fail to meet that standard.

Pardon my ignorance, but American Samoa which has no electoral votes, but lots of US citzens.......do their vote count in the “national” total?

This whole approach is not well thought out? Can and election be “won” before those in Hawaii finish voting?

This is actually good news. The election will be invalid. So the democrat loses one more states electoral college votes.

I can’t see how it is - they’re basically saying they have the right to change the system and disenfranchise voters. We have a system that rules all, they can’t just decide for themselves that they’ll do something else.

This is very dangerous. They want to tip the scales to Democrats in a manner that will be permanent. They’re openly rigging the system. Obama’s legacy; weaponize the government and allow lawlessness so that D’s will always win. Evil.

In other words, candidates can safely ignore Connecticut.

The Constitution was set up the way it was to prevent populous states from having undue influence on the outcome, and to give smaller states a say in the outcome.

Exactly what they have voted against.

Thank you.

A number of FReepers might respond by reminding us that Democrats, liberals, and progressives (but I repeat myself) do not consider the Constitution as still being a factor to consider for any bill or law.

I’m embarrassed to live in Connecticut. It truly is the “Nutball” State.

I was just in Greenwich the other day and,out of curiosity, took a drive past where Martha Moxley was murdered. If I were to win the lottery I'd buy a 1,000 sq ft condo or coop there.

CT now gave all their votes to CA on everything.
You want free stuff for everyone who doesn’t want to work, CA will vote for it.
You want special rights for anyone for just about anything... CA will vote for it.

Fools.

“so why, as a CT voter, vote? The nation votes for you, essentially.”

They would argue that your vote does count, because it adds to the national vote totals. This is a very bad idea, and as already stated essentially means that those living in cities will decide how the rest of us live. According to the US Census, 62.7% of the US population live in cities, although cities represent only 3.5% of the US land area.

But with this plan all candidates need to do is focus on population centers.

Blockade population centers for two weeks, and there would be no population centers...

Maybe that's what the Deplorables should do instead of "voting" in the next "election"...

So far only “Blue” states have done this popular vote winner nonsense... and I guarandamntee you, if the GOP candidate wins the popular vote (especially if the DemWit won the EVs)... everyone of these DemWit states will immediately call a special session and repeal their popular vote winner laws before the December vote of the Electoral College!

You know I’m right!

I wonder if they care about the voters there, apparently not.

Given CT’s voting patterns, that is more likely to benefit us than the Progressives.
CT always goes Democrat - but if Trump wins the popular vote, he gets it.

"2: Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress: but no Senator or Representative, or Person holding an Office of Trust or Profit under the United States, shall be appointed an Elector."

This has only to do with the manner in which the electors are selected; it does not give the states the authority to tell the electors how to vote, or to allow the votes of the state electors to be overruled by the national popular vote.

It is a violation of the basic principles of representative, republican government and of American federalism.

This law is intended to render the electoral college meaningless by violating the will of the people in the respective states, and by effectively turning the presidential election into a national popular vote, in violation of the Constitution.

As far as I know, they can direct their votes to the popular vote in THEIR state....not the national total.

We shall see.

> The states have leeway in determining how their electors are SELECTED, but that does not mean they can tell the electors how to VOTE. <

That is an interesting argument. But Connecticut can get around it. As it is now, electors can vote any way they want when they meet as an Electoral College. But 99% of them vote as expected.

So Connecticut Democrats would just have to pick as electoral college candidates those folks who favor the Compact.

You’re not telling the electors how to vote. But you’re getting the same result.

The Connecticut legislature has plenary authority to appoint Electors in any manner they choose.
