Ernesto Davila Marin was in elementary school when rebellion interrupted class. As he left the schoolhouse that October day, black smoke rose from the town center where nationalists had set Jayuya ablaze, shooting police officers and declaring the independent republic of Puerto Rico from a rooftop. In the struggle for sovereignty from American colonial rule, Puerto Rican independence fighters staged uprisings in nearly a dozen cities that day in 1950 and later attempted to assassinate President Harry S. Truman. They held the central mountain city for three days until U.S. Air Force bombers buzzed over the emerald peaks packed with payloads.

We can thank Teddy Roosevelt for this. Congress divested all the spoils of the Spanish American War, but he insisted we keep Puerto Rico.
I believe that Puerto Rico could be a great state. I believe the governor is Republican, so don’t judge. However, if we make it into an independent nation, we might have China as a neighbor.
And don't wear jewelry if you do leave the grounds.
Especially rings unless you want to lose a finger.
And don't walk the beach at night, even in groups.
And don't flash money.
I’m all for P.R. to become their own country, and be away from us.
They come over here flying their flag, speaking their language, and even in the military they do this.
Get rid of them, and tell the ones here they have to go back to their own country, their country which they love so much.
Their problems are self-inflicted.
They don't deserve statehood until they can show they can take care of their own business.
Wanting a handout from Uncle Sam is not reason enough for statehood. We have enough of these failed states within our own borders now. Why would we reward failure and force the taxpayers to foot the bill?
We don't need another democRAT state with liberal leaders who do not know what they are doing.
“but he insisted we keep Puerto Rico.”
And there is the answer...make it now a late day purge. Or give it back to Spain. We can be magnanimous and toss in the upper east side of NYC too.
It’s time for the United States to cut ties with them.... Let the Spaniards have them back.
Actually... Give the Spaniards California too.
Puerto Rico is a purple leaning blue area, no different than Illinois or New Jersey that have had Republican governors often, and Republican congress critters in some districts.
Historically the Puerto Rican Republicans were Rockefeller Republicans. But the most recent Republican governor was a Steve Forbes, Club for Growth type on economic issues and pro life, pro 2d amendment on social issues.
In other words, if Republicans would not write off purple areas in both Puerto Rico and in the Continental US, the Republicans would be better off. There are good people in purple areas.... and in blue areas.
Certainly Trump taught us that and we should learn the lesson Trump taught us.
Cut ‘em loose!
The only way the country can survive another left-wing socialist, failed state would be for California to secede or be kicked out first.
Bingo! Id sure like to see it all go away though. The whole mess of that crummy little island. It has always been more trouble than worth.
LOL, Puerto Rico can go free and become rich. Open it’s naval bases/ harbor to the Chinese and the Russians, maybe even Iran. Of course that would eventually lead to a take over via immigration of the guests. Far fetched, the Monroe Doctrine with Trump will be enforced but with jelly fish backbone of of a Lib President it could happen??? I could see a typical Latin American dictatorship coming to power in PR. Maybe the Clinton Foundation can help them improve their economy. (”Their” = PR not the Clintons)
Let Puerto Rico become its own country and not another state.
Sorry, we're all out of money and sympathy.
We should give them back to Spain. Sorry, that whole war thing was a big misunderstanding, have your island back!
Put more simply, independent P.R. would be quickly glommed by the Cubans, not unwelcome to most PR’s who regard communist Cuba as a counter to U.S. influence in the Caribbean.
Let the PR’s enjoy the wonderful socialist lifestyle of the Castro bro’s paradise. Cut ‘em loose!
Independence ... what possible benefit would there be in making it the 51st state.
Another reason holding PR back is over-reliance on digital currency and electronic systems in general. If people had cash and precious metals, we would have seen more money velocity which means more economic activity for reconstruction.
This. I really dont give a rats patootie about PR. Kick them loose and let them try and survive on their own. At this point theyre just a welfare state that we can no longer afford.
We dont need a 51st state. Gotta split up California and New York first.
