7 Forces Driving America Toward Civil War
Townhall.com ^ | April 21, 2018 | John Hawkins

Posted on 04/21/2018 5:19:30 AM PDT by Kaslin

I was interviewed by a mainstream media reporter yesterday. I thought he wanted to talk tech issues, but we actually spent almost the entire conversation discussing the feeling that many conservatives have that America has gone off the tracks and is headed toward dissolution or alternately, a civil war one day. Obviously, this would be a terrible thing and ironically, twenty years ago, it would have been laughable. Today, the joke isn’t so funny because we are a deeply unhealthy society with a dysfunctional government and for all our money, success and storied history, we seem to be on an increasingly dangerous trajectory.

1) A Post-Constitutional Era: Liberals don’t believe in the Constitution. Typically they deny this, but that’s exactly what a “living” Constitution means. You make it up as you go along. The Founders foresaw the instability and danger that would be created by this approach, which is why they wanted us to be a constitutional republic, not a democracy. Unfortunately, America has in many ways already become a post-constitutional democracy and we’re one liberal judge away from abandoning the Constitution altogether. Once we get to that point, America just becomes the representation of that old saying, “Democracy is two wolves and a sheep deciding what to have for dinner.” Of course people are not lambs and when large numbers of them believe they aren’t being treated fairly, they do have the option of getting away from the wolves.

2) Tribalism: The “you only have to listen to people you already agree with” nature of social media has dramatically ramped up the level of tribalism in the United States. The Right has gotten much more tribal since Donald Trump rose to prominence and the Left has taken tribalism into hyper-drive. Increasingly, liberals treat a range of opinion between Elizabeth Warren and Hillary Clinton as legitimate while everyone else is viewed as a white supremacist Nazi primitive that must be driven down into the gutter for society to move forward. This makes any sort of dialogue or cooperation nearly impossible. When every issue is a zero sum war where one tribe must win or lose, a lot of people quite understandably ask, “What do we gain by staying allied to this other tribe?”

3) Federal Government Too PowerfulFederalism is a safety valve on the American pressure cooker. As long as people in San Francisco can, for the most part, live the way they want to live while the people in rural North Carolina can, for the most part, live the way they want to live, it’s much easier for everyone to get along. When people are unnecessarily forced to live under rules they find abhorrent because the federal government has become an octopus that has inserted its tentacles into every minute crevice of American life, it creates discontent on a wide scale. If most Americans wanted to live like people in San Francisco, they’d live in San Francisco.

4) Moral Decline: As Samuel Adams once noted, “A general dissolution of principles and manners will more surely overthrow the liberties of America than the whole force of the common enemy. While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but when once they lose their virtue then will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader.”

A large number of Americans HAVE LOST their principles, manners and virtue and it shows through from the sort of politicians they elect, to their rudeness online, to the sort of shallow hedonism and fame whoring they find appealing. Americans are increasingly becoming a soft and decadent people which is problematic because the challenges may change, but we can be certain that Americans will face future challenges every bit as difficult as the ones past generations had to tackle. This is frightening because if you look at the “principles, manners and virtue” of Americans today, they don’t seem capable of dealing with monumental events like the War of 1812, the Civil War, the Depression or World War II. Most people in their twenties probably couldn’t tell you why all those events were such challenges in the first place. When America faces a challenge bigger than we can handle because of ineffective politicians and our “amusing ourselves to death” population, there are no guarantees our republic will survive.

5) The Debt: America is a freight train heading toward a cliff, but because we’re not moving toward the edge at lightning speed, no one seems all that concerned. However, the fact of the matter is that a reckoning is coming. At some point, probably within the next decade or two, we will face a debt-driven economic collapse; borrowed money will stop flowing into the United States and Medicare/Social Security as we know it will fall apart because we will not have the money to pay it. If and when we get to that point, all bets are off because if regions of the country see an advantage to splitting off from the United States at that point, they will do it.

6) Lack Of A Shared Culture: There has never been a time when American culture was more fragmented than it is today. By that, I mean that there are legions of people with millions of fans or followers on the Internet that the vast majority of Americans have never heard of in their lives. We don’t have that shared love of anybody or for that matter, anything. Conservatives and liberals disagree on economics (capitalist/socialist), religion (friendly to Christianity/hostile to Christianity), the Constitution (support/believe in a living Constitution i.e. no Constitution), etc., on and on. The average conservative and the average liberal disagree on 95% of the issues and in the few limited cases where they do look at things the same, they won’t support a proposal by the other out of sheer tribalism. Over the long haul, there has be something more to hold a country together than, “We wear Nikes, like pop music and play golf.”

7) Gun Grabbing:  Liberals have fallen in love with the idea of ignoring the 2nd Amendment and confiscating all firearms. The logistics of doing this in a nation with hundreds of millions of guns (many of which are off the books) when many police departments and tens of millions of Americans would not cooperate is seldom discussed. Another thing that seldom seems brought up is that large numbers of conservatives would see this as a prelude to the government’s use of force against the citizenry. When it is discussed on the Left, there seems to be an assumption that lone resisters might get into firefights with dozens of police or soldiers, as opposed to ganging up with other formerly law-abiding Americans to waylay gun confiscators, politicians and anti-gun activists at THEIR HOMES in guerrilla actions that would be silently applauded and supported by hundreds of millions of Americans concerned about their freedom. Confiscating guns is a dangerous and stupid idea that could in and of itself end our republic if a serious attempt were ever made to implement it.

Cowardice on the side of the correct to retaliate quickly, firmly and with certainty against the lawbreakers. Failure to nip this shit in the bud had a big effect.

Huge effect. Tyrants no longer fear refreshing the tree of liberty while we are "amusing ourselves to death”.

I like your optimism, unfortunately I have very little of it in this case because of the dumbed down past few generations and the morally bankrupt left running so many institutions for so long.

“What’s happening now is that the left wants to change the USA into a socialist/quasi communist country without a bloody revolution. They think they can cheat, lie, steal, finesse and slough their way to political victory without out violence.”...........

They know that everyone of us MUST BE DISARMED in order to accomplish their goals. What they fail to consider how many on their side will no longer be around once Civil War III starts.

Your analysis is excellent. We can’t think in terms of simplicity, despite being conditioned to think in soundbites and Twitter jibes. It will be complex as the CW gets under way.

Question: Assuming people like me are absolutely correct that a Civil War is starting, what would be an alternative in which the hard left blacks, feminists,Dems,TV and print media leftists, and Soros forces would somehow meet with the hard right talk radio,Trump fans,1st & 2nd amendment supporters, true conservatives and FReepers and find common ground and peaceful resolution? Any ideas?

on eligible people not voting—

Henry Miller (proto-hippie and global citizen as he was) wrote: They tell us in America we have freedom to choose in politics. What blasphemy! They allow us to choose from A or B and that’s it.

People see Jeb Bush,Lindsay Graham or McCain on the GOP ballot side and Hillary,Pelosi,BLM candidates and Planned Parentood candidates on the Dem side. They stay home. What if we voted for Trump to break the spending habit of the government? Sorry to tell you how that budget worked out. Still voted for Trump in the primary and election and love him anyway—don’t misunderstand me.

Well, as an example as to why this might not be as big of a problem as you think, let's look at the “blue belt” of counties in Alabama.

Except for Jefferson County (Birmingham) and Montgomery county, all of the others are very small population-wise. The red counties actually have far more people.

There are 67 counties in Alabama. 13 voted for Hillary, 54 for Trump.

So, let's look at those blue counties.

And their County name, population, percent White and percent Black:

Jefferson County: 659,000 53% 42% (this this the outlier, and also the only really big city in Alabama, so it has the largest amount of white leftists.

Now, the "Blue belt", from East to West:

Russell County: 52,947 53% 46% (Hillary won by 300 or so votes)

Macon County: 21,452 15.5% 82.6%

Bullock County: 10,914 23% 73.3%

Montgomery county: 229,363 48.85% 48.58%

Lowndes County: 11,299 25.3% 73.5%

Dallas County: 43,820 29.1% 69.4%

Perry County: 10,591 30.3% 68.7%

Marengo County: 21,027 46.4% 51.7%

Wilcox County: 11,670 26.8% 72.5%

Hale County: 15,760 39.8% 59%

Greene County: 9,045 17.4% 81.5%

Sumter County: 13,763 24.2% 75%
.
.
.
.
.
.

White Counties (all red—by population):

Mobile County: 412,992 60.2% 34.6%

Madison County: 334,811 65.9% 24.6%

Shelby County: 195,085 83% 10.2%

Tuscaloosa County: 194,656 68.12% 23.9%

Baldwin County: 182,265 85.7% 9.4%

Lee County: 140,247 71.3% 22.7%

I'll stop here.

The bottom line, the largest county that is majority black is Dallas, with 43K people. The largest county in all of Alabama, which actually is white majority (slightly) is Jefferson, which is the city of Birmingham. The city itself is Black majority.

The next two largest counties, Mobile and Madison, which together are larger in population than Jefferson, are majority white and voted Red.

Alabama is predominately white and conservative. That won't change. Those 12 counties that make up the “Blue belt” aren't going to change either, but in totality, they're not a lot of people.

I agree there were many good people - on FR and elsewhere - in early 2015 who didn't have Trump at the top of their list. But I would submit to you that by June 2016 when Mr Hawkins wrote his screed, if you weren't for Trump you effectively were for Hillary. True, catharsis and confession are always around the corner but I haven't seen Mr Hawkins' mea culpa (though this back-handed "complimentary" Trump piece suggests he's still in denial.

As for the subjective 95% lie sprinkled amongst the truths, Rasmussen (which is the only reliable tracking poll) has had Trump in the 45-50% range for a while. He's currently polling better than Obama at his 14 month mark. As for this intimation that back in the good old days we all got along, that's hogwash. As I've written elsewhere on this topic, by most accounts, at the time of the Revolution, 20% were Loyalists, 33-45% were Patriots, and the rest were ballast. If you replace Loyalist with statist, and Patriots with Deplorables, we are right where we started.

This 95% #FakeStatistic is designed to make people think Trump is polarizing. Yea, he is...but not in the way Mr Hawkins wants you to believe. Trump is effectively causing people to unmask themselves, and the resulting hideous vision is leading people to flee their prior tribe(s). As noted elsewhere, Liberals/Loyalists have made politics their religion...What they really want is liberal Sharia law, a secular theocracy....for them, politics is the means to secular salvation. The minimum wage, gender equality, nationalized health care, and global warming—whatever their practical virtues—are not just expedient policy prescriptions. They are essential aspects of the liberal fatwa...Question them and you are not just wrong—you are a heretic.

One of the key and many times unsung elements of Trump and Deplorables, is that the coalition he put together has the potential to unite heretofore un-united individuals. Minorities of all stripes (blacks, hispanics, gays), union guys, and others used by the statists for decades suddenly seem willing to jump on the Trump Train. While many Patriots may chafe at the thought of working alongside some of these masses, I'd rather have Peter Thiel and Ben Carson in my boat than McCain or W.

I get your point. It's pretty grim in places. But I believe it's not as bad as Mr Hawkin wants us to believe.

“Whether we like it or not a lot of our food is grown in CA. In a CW, that goes away for the Red States. All those blue counties in the south....a lot of food is grown there as well.”

These entities are not simply going to continue business as usual. Their worst enemy is their own political kind. Free food!! Those places will be stripped of equipment (just because), food, means for raising said food (e.g., mass watering/irrigation systems), etc. The animals care less about tomorrow, but what they want NOW. They will feed on their own FIRST! The Rats will never, ever be able to control their “constituents” in a free-for-all environment!

Even if 80% agree that they have been lied to, that just starts the discussion.

Without shared values there can be no Union.

They are the SA of the Left.

Once they get the Revolution they're fighting for, they'll get their own "Night of the Long Knives", once their services are no longer required.

The first Civil War gives clue how this might play out—a series of provocations (intentional or unintentional) would inflame both sides—think Bleeding Kansas, the Dred Scott decision, the John Brown raid, etc.

John Adams and John Calhoun had a civil discussion about the possibility of civil war as early as the 1820s, but it took until the 1850s to make it happen.

I don’t think any comparable “incident” has happened yet—so we are probably looking at another ten years of peace.

Then—watch out!

Nothing new about civil wars and rumours of wars, so whats different about this time,

This is not a battle against flesh and blood,

This is the spirit of anti-Christ rising up for the last days, having its own zealous adherents beating the drum for its rise:

george swartz (soros) or whatever his name is playing the role of Joseph of Arimathea
barry soetoro, frank marshall davis jr, belshazzar of Babylon or whatever this demonic creature calls itself today
nancy pelosi (hateful bird of Babylon)
hillary clinton (Jezebel)
paul ryan
mitch McConnell
schumer
mccain
cuomo
jerry brown
Pope Francis
merkel
macron
corrupted law enforcement agencies (FBI NSA CIA)
corrupted supreme court
weaponized IRS
corrupted managed MSM/social media
etc.,

They all openly serve it and derive their power and authority by doing so, given over to becoming reprobates in their authority,

It used to be carefully hidden away out of site, mostly unseen,

Not anymore, it operates out in the open now and next will use technology to increase itself,

This is all true. But my personal opinion is that multiculturalism is #1. We are now a people decided instead of the American stew. People now come to the USA with no intention of becoming Americans.
