Arizona Senate moves to change rules for replacing McCain

The Republican-controlled Arizona Legislature is moving to ensure that ailing Sen. John McCain’s seat isn’t on the November ballot if he leaves office, but Democrats plan to block the effort.

The effort emerged Tuesday as the state Senate put an emergency clause on a bill changing how members of Congress who die or resign are replaced.

U.S. Senate vacancies are filled by a governor’s appointee, with the seat on the next general election ballot. The secretary of state has interpreted that to mean that if McCain’s seat is vacated by May 31, it would be on the August primary and November general election ballot. The new proposal changes that to 150 days before the primary, or March 31 of this year. That takes McCain’s seat out of play.

McCain was diagnosed with brain cancer last summer and has been recovering in Arizona since before Christmas. He was hospitalized over the weekend for intestinal surgery needed to stem an infection and remains in a Phoenix hospital in stable condition.

The emergency clause requires a two-thirds vote, and Democratic Sen. Steve Farley said that won’t happen. …

That’s if they were conservative, and did not have a plurality of members in the Uniparty.

What is the true story on McCain’s health? Is he practically on his deathbed or doing just OK? When was the last time he was seen?

It would not surprise me if he passes on, and the governor temporarily selects McCain’s wife to fill the seat.

Not a good luck. That’s the kind of BS they pulled in Massachusetts when Ted Kennedy was at death’s door.

Given how well the Republicans are doing in special elections... I think they just shot themselves in the foot. McCain isn’t going to be miraculously healed. He should have resigned by now because he sure isn’t serving anybody’s interests beside his own at this point.

Headline should read John McCain, dead before November.

Can’t say I’ll miss him.

I hope the gov appoints Juan McPain’s first wife.

That faithful darling, held out to him, the whole time he was held by Hanoi, then was abandoned/divorced by him, as soon as he came back to the states.

Cant. Too many crimes. He might be ill but still has power. If he steps down, he loses power and actions against him are more likely to commence before he likely checks out.

Dueling polls for Flake seat

(ABC-15/OHPI): ex-St Sen Kelli Ward 36%, Cong Martha McSally 27%, ex-Sheriff Joe Arpaio 22%

Same poll has the rat leading the general by 5 (against McSally) and by 10 (against Ward)

(Magellan): Cong Martha McSally 36%, ex-Sheriff Joe Arpaio 26%, ex-St Sen Kelli Ward 25%

Right. McSally always seems to work in the word, “system”. Don’t know why, but it sticks out like a sore thumb when she does it.
