The Republican-controlled Arizona Legislature is moving to ensure that ailing Sen. John McCains seat isnt on the November ballot if he leaves office, but Democrats plan to block the effort.
The effort emerged Tuesday as the state Senate put an emergency clause on a bill changing how members of Congress who die or resign are replaced.
U.S. Senate vacancies are filled by a governors appointee, with the seat on the next general election ballot. The secretary of state has interpreted that to mean that if McCains seat is vacated by May 31, it would be on the August primary and November general election ballot. The new proposal changes that to 150 days before the primary, or March 31 of this year. That takes McCains seat out of play.
McCain was diagnosed with brain cancer last summer and has been recovering in Arizona since before Christmas. He was hospitalized over the weekend for intestinal surgery needed to stem an infection and remains in a Phoenix hospital in stable condition.
The emergency clause requires a two-thirds vote, and Democratic Sen. Steve Farley said that wont happen.

Republicans would be better off if a dem took that seat.
I’d love to hear that explained.
If McCain gave a hoot about anyone but himself he’d resign, die in peace, and let the Gov exercise his right to appoint a successor. However we all know that McCain only gives a hoot about himself and is utterly graceless.
All governors should appoint all Senators.
Juan McShame ought to follow Thad Cochran’s example and resign.
He hasn’t been able to fulfill his senatorial duties for quite sometime already and he should step down, allowing Governor Ducey to replace him.
Arizona desperately needs two MAGA voices in the upper chamber.
BTW, I’m not thrilled with the prospect of Martha McSally succeeding Flake. Every time I watch her in an interview, she makes me cringe when she says something to the effect of a “border wall system.”
In any case, I wish Arizona well in electing/replacing their two horrible senators.
Of course, I’m stuck in Maryland with two miserable RATS!!
“If McCain gave a hoot about anyone but himself hed resign, die in peace, and let the Gov exercise his right to appoint a successor. However we all know that McCain only gives a hoot about himself and is utterly graceless.”
Exactly. McCain should resign.
I’d settle to start out with one per State.
He wont because I believe his wife is now pulling the strings.
That’s just crazy. A Dem majority means no Trump judges.
I’m sure McCain is behind the Democrats organizing this.
He really wants his Emily List wife to replace him just before she flips to RAT
Look. If he croaks after May 31 the GOP appointed successor gets the seat or 2 years+. I don’t want to sound like a vulture but making the rules as one go may be more fun. At least we aren’t like Lautenberg stealing the seat in NJ.
If McCrazy resigns whod fund the Syrian Jihadists ?
Remember how the Democrat super majority in the Massachusetts legislature kept changing the law to be whatever was most convenient at any given moment when it came to replacing a U.S. Senator (like when Romney was Governor)?
In case anyone is unable to read between the lines, this means they expect McCain to be deceased before May 31st.
Shows his real nature of power madness.
...or resign before May 31st.
If McCain knows he can’t go back, he should resign prior to that date, but I’m thinking he intends to and believes he will be back.
Ditto.
“has been recovering “
Hmmm, not so much “recovering”.
I wonder if the reason for this bill is to let the Gov appoint a conservative (Kelli Ward) and give her time to make her bones with the voters.
McSally will have plenty of donor dough to run, and the conservatives wouldn’t be mad then.
Ha! Ha! Just imaginng the Republican Party had a brain...
