Mary Jo Kopechne’s Family on Ted Kennedy and Chappaquiddick: 'The Truth Has Never Really Come Out'

Mary Jo Kopechne had been dead for several months when her parents began to have serious questions about what really happened the night of July 18, 1969.

At first, Gwen and Joe Kopechne had believed Senator Ted Kennedy’s account of that evening. “They trusted him,” says Mary Jo’s aunt, Georgetta Potoski, 75. “They loved the Kennedys. But later on, they started to question what happened.”

Ted Kennedy could never escape the unanswered questions about his 10-hour delay in reporting the accident to Edgartown police.

“The longer it went on, more and more inconsistencies were discovered and he wasn’t telling Gwen and Joe anything,” says Potoski ,the sister of Gwen Kopechne. “Gwen and Joe never had the last hours of their daughter’s life explained to them.”

Now, 49 years after Mary Jo’s death, a new movie Chappaquiddick explores what happened that night and in the week that followed, when Kennedy pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident.

Potoski and her son William Nelson, 46, hope the film may prompt someone to come forward with new information— and give them the answers they never got from Senator Kennedy. “The truth has never really come out,” says Nelson. “The story has never been put to rest.”

The film has not been well-received by the Kennedy camp.

Still, Potoski and her family hope that Mary Jo’s story being told on screen will result in more people learning that she was much more than just a “blonde secretary,” as she was often referred to at the time.

Potoski and Nelson have written a book, Our Mary Jo, about her life and have also launched a scholarship in her name at Potoski’s alma mater, Misericordia College (now Misericordia University), to be given out for the first time this year.

When Ted Kennedy got to Hell I hope he told Hitler..

For a long time I've had this joke in need of a punchline:

After the Clintons died they met Stalin, Hitler, and Mao and told them...

“Well, the truth would have come out if YOUR FAMILY had told it!!!”

Perhaps, but the news media was even more controlled then than now, and they were 100% Kennedy worshippers. The police and prosecutors knew Teddy was drunk and murdered the pregnant girlfriend, at minimum via vehicular homicide (more likely by looking after his skin instead of rescuing her when he could have), then engaged in a cover-up that law enforcement was 100% in on. The daughter was dead. Her family could either sell out, or expect the Kennedys, media, local law enforcement, the judicial system, Church, State, etc. to drag Mary Jo Kopechne through the mud and destroy them. (Predictable storyline: “Slut drowns self to cover up pregnancy by retarded negro; tries to murder Teddy in mafia vendetta to soil the sacred memory of John and Bobby; family blackmails Kennedys; another Kennedy tragedy”). I’m not justifying their decisions, which seem loathsome on the surface, but it was not a black and white choice. Any truth they told would have been obliterated. (And maybe it was...).

If i were my story I would have done the same- waited until obamabushclintons were so out of power that they had only their media to work for them and so intensely that this story got past the busy media on to the screen.

Unless I were someone like Trump, able to get past these people on my own wits and earnings, without needing anyone or any talent in treachery. But people like Trump are rare.

B-1 Bob Dornan would get quite angry over the cover up.

He said some high level Catholic officials visited the Kopechne family right after her death, and silenced them.

“Her parents, who are dead now, were probably threatened.”

and/or they didn’t know all the details because the matter was covered up.

Teddy Kennedy can’t “buy his way out of Hell!”

Edward M. (Ted) Kennedy (D-HELL) continued the family tradition of unpunished misbehavior...on earth.

From some older news stories, the family was paid $250,000 provided they never say anything about it. (equiv. of $2 million plus a few in today’s money).

If some sleazy politician left my daughter to die slowly, alone and afraid, while he ginned up some story of his own heroism then $2M would be nowhere near enough to stop me from doing everything I could to ruin that scumbag.

Sort of like the several dozen survivors of Benghazi. Never heard from a single one of them.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I know who you mean ... I believe they were required to sign NDAs & I suspect they were also threatened. Speaking of 'threatened' .....

Fortunately, Kris "Tanto" Paranto is alive & well .... and speaking his mind.

By the way, as you’re on your way out I want to thank you, James and your @HillaryClinton supporting hacks at the @FBI for trying to pin excessive force use on myself and my team after coming home from Benghazi. You all are the worst scum of human. @Comey #SorryNotSorry

I don’t know if he was in the car or not, but I confess, I’m wondering now... if he was able to get out, why couldn’t she?

Teddy was a sleaze bucket before he killed her and after he killed her. He was one bad man his entire life.

Roger Mudd was a fine journalist. I think one of his distant relatives, a physician treated John Wilkes Booth’s broken ankle when he was on the run after the assassination of Lincoln. Dr. Mudd was mistreated after that event. Was Roger also abused?

They have been to the country what the Brown’s have been to us here in California.

The Kennedy's were never the saints they were made out to be but they can't hold a candle to the destructive legacy of the clinton's and the obama's.
