By now, it is clear that many officials either willfully ignored or missed warning signs that the mass murderer who killed 17 innocent Americans in last month's shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida needed severe mental help. But, until today, it was never clear that anybody who had recommended Nikolas Cruz for involuntary institutionalization.
The Associated Press now reports that school officials and a sheriff's deputy recommended that Cruz should be "forcibly committed."
...documents in the criminal case against Nikolas Cruz and obtained by The Associated Press show school officials and a sheriff's deputy recommended in September 2016 that Cruz be involuntarily committed for a mental evaluation.
The documents, which are part of Cruz's criminal case in the shooting, show that he had written the word "kill" in a notebook, told a classmate that he wanted to buy a gun and use it, and had cut his arm supposedly in anger because he had broken up with a girlfriend. He also told another student he had drunk gasoline and was throwing up. Calls had even been made to the FBI about the possibility of Cruz using a gun at school.
The documents were provided by a psychological assessment service initiated by Cruz's mother called Henderson Behavioral Health. The documents show a high school resource officer who was also a sheriff's deputy and two school counselors recommended in September 2016 that Cruz be committed for mental evaluation under Florida's Baker Act. That law allows for involuntary commitment for mental health examination for at least three days.
Such an involuntary commitment would also have been a high obstacle if not a complete barrier to legally obtaining a firearm, such as the AR-15 rifle used in the Stoneman Douglas massacre on Feb. 14, authorities say.
As the AP notes, the school resource officer who recommended institutionalization was Scot Peterson. Peterson is the man who resigned for failing to enter the building where the shooting was occurring for several minutes after arriving first at the scene.
Had Cruz actually been committed, he more likely than not would have been prevented from purchasing the deadly weapons used in the horrific shooting.
Of course “the government will protect you!”
Just ask the American Indian!
The “Promise Program,” an Ophonybama initiative, is what killed Trayvon Martin and these 17 students!
More and more and more and more of this kind of information is coming out, yet the narrative is still that it is the NRA’s fault.
We obviously already had ample laws and policies / procedures in place to have prevented this from happening and none were enforced - numerous times over.
But of course we had the Leftist hacks seeking their 15 minutes of fame presented in glowing terms tonight on 60 minutes with their agenda that has nothing to do with any of these numerous revelations.
So, the rest of us are all supposed to surrender our rights because the authorities f’d up time and time and time again?
OOps!
Here: take MY AR-15!
The left is just fine with about 3,300 future American students being killed by CHOICE: EVERY DAY!!.
What's 17 older folks in the Grand Scheme of Things?
Someone said his MOM was a drug addict.
Right. CowRdly lack of enforcement renders any laws ineffective
The problem wasnt the Second or NRA. The problem is FBI Scott Israel and their band of chicken s*** incompetents
> My comment was in regard to the Deputy. If the cowardly
> deputy is not in a position to even see the shooter then he
> certainly cant KNOW who it was.
According to the arrest report published in the Boston Globe the Sunday following the massacre, the on-site duty officer SAW Cruz exit the Uber, SAW cruz carrying the duffle bag, KNEW who Cruz was when he saw him, SAW Cruz walking in a “purposeful manner” towards the schoole, and DID NOTHING to stop him!!!
Lefty liberla fascist can’t tell shit from shinola. Their society or “Utopia” is falling apart.
The decision not to commit Cruz is one marker.Their liberal fascist police signed away their ability to protect students in a race based stand-down program for students in Parkland, with efforts by Obama, CAIR and the NAACP, the Broward Co. Sheriff’s Dept., and the Parkland School board: RESULT: FAILURE TO PROTECT.
New the national left is rolling out their kids to parrot liberal fascist GUN CONTROL ideology.... RESULT : FAILURE TO PROTECT.
And the walking bridge collapse in Miami-Dade , that’s another indicator. The local government can’t even exert quality control on their construction contracts .RESULT; FAILURE TO PROTECT
Miami Dade in fact IS a third world country. So are Chicago, LA, San Francisco and other “sanctuary “ cities.
A lot has to change, and change it will.
Do I have to go to the link to find out why the recommendation for Cruz’ involuntary mental evaluation was not acted on, or did the AP report not even look for, or get, an answer to that?
The deputy probably did not stop the other purposeful students going into the school either.
Right.
But he recognized this miscreant, knew that he was trouble, knew he had made threats to shoot up the school, and even recommended involuntary commitment to a mental health unit.
But he did NOTHING to stop him from entering the building.
A lot of kids and some parents are troublemakers too. The problem with this guy goes back a ways and action should have been taken long ago.
My problem with the deputy is not that he didn’t stop and frisk every problem kid that went into the school. My problem is he didn’t confront the shooter once the shots began.
Imagine that!
IIRC, he and his brother were adopted FRom Russia.
Thanks, Elsie. US Government treatment of the American Indian is one of the most illuminating chapters of our history.
The bottom line, if the government takes a dislike to you, you are screwed! “Equal justice under the law” does not apply!
