By now, it is clear that many officials either willfully ignored or missed warning signs that the mass murderer who killed 17 innocent Americans in last month's shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida needed severe mental help. But, until today, it was never clear that anybody who had recommended Nikolas Cruz for involuntary institutionalization.
The Associated Press now reports that school officials and a sheriff's deputy recommended that Cruz should be "forcibly committed."
...documents in the criminal case against Nikolas Cruz and obtained by The Associated Press show school officials and a sheriff's deputy recommended in September 2016 that Cruz be involuntarily committed for a mental evaluation.
The documents, which are part of Cruz's criminal case in the shooting, show that he had written the word "kill" in a notebook, told a classmate that he wanted to buy a gun and use it, and had cut his arm supposedly in anger because he had broken up with a girlfriend. He also told another student he had drunk gasoline and was throwing up. Calls had even been made to the FBI about the possibility of Cruz using a gun at school.
The documents were provided by a psychological assessment service initiated by Cruz's mother called Henderson Behavioral Health. The documents show a high school resource officer who was also a sheriff's deputy and two school counselors recommended in September 2016 that Cruz be committed for mental evaluation under Florida's Baker Act. That law allows for involuntary commitment for mental health examination for at least three days.
Such an involuntary commitment would also have been a high obstacle if not a complete barrier to legally obtaining a firearm, such as the AR-15 rifle used in the Stoneman Douglas massacre on Feb. 14, authorities say.
As the AP notes, the school resource officer who recommended institutionalization was Scot Peterson. Peterson is the man who resigned for failing to enter the building where the shooting was occurring for several minutes after arriving first at the scene.
Had Cruz actually been committed, he more likely than not would have been prevented from purchasing the deadly weapons used in the horrific shooting.
Maybe my tinfoil hat is too tight, but this incident has false flag written all over it.
5.56mm
Sums it up, huh?
Didn’t know it was him?
Maybe, but they would have had a pretty good idea of who it was doing the shooting.
Probably a very good idea of who it was.
Yup
Me too
No. How could they know it was? Heck the deputies didn’t even get close enough to see what the guy looked like while the shooting was going on. :-) It could have been a muslim dude or some other wackjob.
but its the NRA’s fault!
School shootings are possibly mere “bumps in the road” to the communists, Obama and Hillary.
I have never heard a word about his REAL parents, only his adoptive ones.
Not necessarily. The identity of the shooter had to be known while he was firing, or based on his appearance when he arrived. Cruz left the school mixed in with other students who did not know, and did not think he was the shooter. Yet Cruz was identified and arrested soon thereafter - highly unlikely unless somebody knew who did the shooting while or before it was happening.
My comment was in regard to the Deputy. If the cowardly deputy is not in a position to even see the shooter then he certainly can’t KNOW who it was.
What reason did they even have to even look for Cruz unless they knew by then that Cruz was the shooter? Supposedly witnesses ID's him (that's needed to support the probable cause for the arrest) but just to find and detain him implies somebody knew he was involved.
Cruz was arrested at 3:41PM, one hour and twenty minutes after he allegedly started shooting at the school.
The government will protect you, said nobody in their right mind.
It is hard to imagine being as much of a coward as Peterson was. I suspect that will lead to a lot of theories as to why somebody might do what he did.
“This fellows brains were fried before he was even born. His mother was a dope addict.”
I would suggest that his mother was an alcoholic. He has the physical features associated with fetal alcohol effect. He certainly has the behavioral features. Yet no one in the government-media complex seems very interested in this probability. One thing I learned at university was that the only students who attended fewer classes and had more drinkin’ and dope smokin’ time than the education majors were the journalism students.
Easy. LEOs interviewed people in the school who identified the shooter. But none of that was known by that deputy in real-time as the shots were being fired which took about six minutes.
So why wasn’t he Baker-ized? That’s been my question from the beginning.
Yeah, usually the shooter doesn't survive. The authorities are then free to characterize the incident any way they want.
