And while that might seem like a nightmare to any mom or dad, parents in the U.S. would not only be financially liable, but likely criminally as well, thanks to the threat of social host laws in many states.

When will the Tide Pods be held responsible?

Its a $20,000 lesson that 14 yr old girls don’t host parties for 200 other teens.

Had that been my daughter she would be thrown to the legal wolves including juvenile/jail, all restitution and had every single possession of hers sold off except her new state issue.

While it’s unfortunate what happened, a 14 year old is unable to enter into binding or legal contracts. They are not able to obtain or use credit accounts. They are not able to rent property (this illustrates why nicely) and the parents were unawares.

Mom & Dad need to tell them to get bent. She is not blameless and should be required to make restitution, but that is a different matter.

The rental cost for the night was $777. No one knows the true
damage yet but some say it will be high

For the parents to get off the hook they will have to file a police/credit card fraud complaint which then puts the credit card company on the hook for the funds and the kid on the hook for the crime.
Hard choice for the parents, to throw your kid to the wolves to save the money. I’m not sure, as a minor, how long she would be subject to criminal and financial responsibility but, if I could hope to keep my kid above water, I would try.

Kid takes credit card from parents without their knowledge, rents house using said card without their knowledge, and holds party in said house without their knowledge and the parents are going to be held responsible for the damages? Parents would absolutely not be liable for the damages in the US. The idiot who rented the house to a minor (who is unable to legally enter into a lease or any other contract) using someone else’s credit card would have to eat it.

I bet word of the party spread over social media. She probably never expected that many to show.

I have an idea how it went down:

“Three hours of massage time , twelve in-room movies, five shoe shines and four hundred dollars worth of snacks. Not to mention the damage to the room.”

“You don’t understand ...my my friend had fleas. I ran into the gas , it could have killed me, and my, my other friend couldn’t taste his peaches, they’re only good for two weeks.”

“I think you’ve read one too many Billy Mumphrey stories. Good day Miss Benes.”

“Okay...Good day..”

Well she did use her parents credit card. I honestly think the property renter should hold some responsible for accepting the credit card from her, and engaging in a contract with her. I'm making some assumptions here because the article does not state if the parents had any involvement in the party at all, or if they did to what extent their involvement was.

But now it becomes the responsibility of the parents to hold their child responsible, to them.

Why is not the LANDLORD also responsible. The renter failed to properly vet the renter.

If I rented my house, then I would be responsible for taking steps do a background check and meet the renter in person and assess risk
