TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) UPDATE (6:15 p.m.):
The National Rifle Association has filed a federal lawsuit over gun control legislation Florida Gov. Rick Scott has signed, saying it violates the Second Amendment by raising the age to buy guns from 18 to 21.
The lawsuit came just hours after Gov. Scott, a Republican, signed the compromise bill Friday afternoon.
Lawyers for the NRA want a federal judge to block the new age restriction from taking effect.
The new legislation raises the minimum age to buy rifles from 18 to 21, extends a three-day waiting period for handgun purchases to include long guns and bans bump stocks that allow guns to mimic fully automatic fire. It also creates a so-called "guardian" program that enables teachers and other school employees to carry handguns.
The new measures come in the wake of the Feb. 14 shooting rampage at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, that killed 17 people.

These people never learn. I am convinced that GHW Bush lost to Clinton mostly because he signed an Assault Weapons Ban and the Gun Free School Zone act. I expect this Scott moron to lose his race for the Senate now. Why would any gun owner vote for a politician recently who signed a gun control law that will do nothing but inconvenience people and further erode their rights? I wouldn’t.
How is Scott’s move tactically wise?
The 17 dead innocents in Parkland FL were failed by the system. Putting more laws on the books isn’t going to change a thing.
As far as the four gun-owning voters in my family are concerned, Scott can go pi$$ up a rope.
Are tobacco and alcohol constitutionally-protected rights?
The 21st Amendment did more than repeal prohibition, it prohibited violating state laws on alcohol. State’s have much more leeway in setting alcohol laws.
The 2nd Amendment would seem to be violated by preventing people of militia age from purchasing militia weapons.
The 14th Amendment would seem to make the 2nd Amendment something that the state’s must uphold.
Rick Scott is now persona non grata AFAIC. If he plans to run for national office, he can count on not having my vote. period.
“Theyll lose. You cant buy alcohol until youre 21.”
Booze ain’t in the constitution. Guns are.
What if the Legislature raises the age for gun purchases to 99 years of age?
Maybe they mean “diversity” of ammunition? Like rimmed vs rimless cases, shotgun shells, or FMJ, hollow point, or what is “ball”. What do you think?
IMHO, anyone that votes for Bill Nelson ain’t the sharpest knife in the drawer. If Governor, Scott, don’t cut the mustard...then primary him. There are plenty of talented Florida Republican Critters In the House. Let one of them run against Scott for the Senator nomination.
The slaughter of innocents in a Broward County School has nothing to do with guns. This horror is at the hands and feet of Democrat, Broward County public servants and a failed Federal government FBI!!! The truth may hurt, but, the truth is still always the truth. You can start with Democrat, Congresswoman, Debbi Wasserman Schultz and, Democrat, Broward County Sheriff, Scott Israel and go on to the FBI from there!!! Sadly...I smell a rat, the truth will opt as the law suit mature. I dread the real story and it’s plan.
“Yes, I would like to purchase a handgun. I know my driver’s license says that I’m 19 but I self-identify as a 50-year old former Green Beret.”
How can there be ANY age limit, even 18? Does the 2nd Ammendment dictate RTBA only applys at 18?
Boy, I SURE am glad Governor Rick Scott is on OUR side... why, just imagine if a Democrat was Governor... he’d have signed that gun control bill in a heartbeat, and, and...
Oh...
Wait a minute...
Nevermind...
Way to go, Governor. Do the Democrats dirty work for them.
Eight years of OBunghole, NOTHING gets passed. But I guess it’s “A-OK” now because “our” guys are in charge...
/s (as if it’s needed)
Hopefully the NRA will figure out a way to shine a light on Sheriff Israel’s culpbility during discovery since no one in Tallahassee is interested in doing it ...
Good point.
It's quite possible this one bill signed by Scott will cost the Republicans the majority in the house. I realize its only Florida but we should be rolling back gun control laws not adding new ones. I think we will lose Florida completely now so even if we do keep the house how will President Trump win reelection without Florida?
There is no excuse for Republicans passing new gun control legislation.
US Code says all men 17 to 49 years old are militia members. The 2nd amendment says that the right to keep and bear arms, in part because of the needs of the militia.
So, it is a violation of US Code under the Constitution to restrict those 17 and older from purchasing firearms. This Florida law is restricting those 17-20 from purchasing firearms.
Oh yeah.... the old no. 7 ammendment I think: "A well speculated beverage, being necessary to the maturity of a Tennessee spirit, the right of the people to keep and cheer jugs, shall not be infringed."
Maybe I've got that wrong...
While the government bans the sale of alcohol and (at least in some states) tobacco to those under the age of 21, there is no constitutional right to drink alcohol or to smoke tobacco. And, yes, the 5th Circuit has upheld restricting gun sales to those 21+, but I dont believe that the 12th Circuit (which covers FL) has ruled on the issue, and neither has SCOTUS. Well see what the courts have to say on this.
Buying alcohol is not a protected right. The 2A is.
