Trump: 'Take the guns first, go through due process second'

President Trump on Wednesday voiced support for confiscating guns from certain individuals deemed to be dangerous, even if it violates due process rights.

“I like taking the guns early, like in this crazy man’s case that just took place in Florida ... to go to court would have taken a long time,” Trump said at a meeting with lawmakers on school safety and gun violence.

“Take the guns first, go through due process second,” Trump said.

Thank you.
From what source did you learn of this context?

He has to be adjudicated “crazy” before being penalized.

Guess what - according to your average progressive, everyone in this forum is crazy

Give them back? Do you really think that would ever happen?

So under no circumstances should Cruz had his guns taken? What if your kid was dead?

I would put the blame where it belongs:

#1 On the killer

#2 On that s***-for-brains, megalomaniacal Sheriff

$3 On the FBI

#4 On the School Administrators

#5 The Media

I sure as hell wouldn't blame the NRA and its over 5 million law-abiding members who had NOTHING WHATSOEVER TO DO WITH THIS.

"A crazy person with guns does not get due process just like a robber with guns gets no due process. The Constitution does not trump natural rights and common law My handle is just fine."

So when I say you're crazy you have no right to due process and your guns are gone?

You're crazy.

Let’s not kid ourselves. He’s conservative to the extent that he thinks about things pragmatically in the face of communist insanity from the left. He’s not a philosophical conservative - it just appears that way when contrasted against our opposition, which is more radicalized than anytime else in history.

What everybody is missing is that this would lead immediately to mandatory gun registration. None of my family knows (or cares) how many guns I own, nor their descriptions.

If I was going a little loony (no jokes here, please), I would just bury one all sealed up in the back yard. When the po-po came with their anti-4th Amendment “warrant” I would cheerfully cooperate. After they left, I would get busy with my shovel.

15 minutes after this “common sense” plan was adopted, the lefties would be demanding 100% registration (and not just on transfers - but all guns). Better start accumulating those private sales guns before we get subjected to universal background checks.

Tyranny is giving a crazy person with guns due process rights. I guess because the word gun is mixed in that somehow crazy people become the new cause celebre amongst Freepers.

Maybe all the crazies loose on the streets and in homeless camps can find a home here on FR among the newly tolerant of crazy people. They were set loose by liberal judges so maybe the same judges and more then a few here took issue with the crazies being set loose.

Sorry but that`s how they did it here. All the townspeople knew they were nuts and they wanted them off the streets.
Even common folk have sound judgments when they all suspect that a fellow is crazy. Another case: I knew a guy in high school that told his class, including myself, he had a bomb in his locker. We knew this guy was a little off but only a teeny bit- But it was enough for him to be arrested in school and thrown into the slammer overnight. That`s how we do it here. Crime Prevention is better than getting blown up.

I wonder if Trump mistakenly believes that the public at large wants stricter gun control after the shooting. Even though it was the Democrats who screwed up in Florida, the NRA, Trump, and Republicans have received blame 24/7 from the media.

The Democrats and the MSM have put Trump in a very difficult spot. If he supports the 2A and the NRA, there will be nonstop propaganda after every single shooting, blaming Trump, Republicans, the NRA and the 2nd Amendment. But if he comes out in support of some form of gun control, he’ll lose some of his base. Basically it feels like he’s in a very tough situation.

I honestly hate the MSM for their nonstop propaganda. No matter what Trump does, he can’t win here.

“...removed from office and get due process later.”

Great point.

This is certainly NOT what winning looks like.

Which makes this situation a fantastic litmus test to determine which folks are in the cult of personality. I love some things Trump has done, but there just is no valid way to excuse his behavior today.

Our party owns all the branches and levels of govt right now. Then comes along the most egregious domestic example of the prior Admin’s fatally flawed liberal school/police/DOJ policy. Which literally is resting right now on a golf tee on top of Obama / Holder heads.

And what does Trump do?

The right thing? Whacking that ball 400 yards and purposely launching a double divot at least half that distance?

Or the wrong thing? Stab common sense, his base, and American Freedom in the back with a full auto Stiletto?

He chose the latter.

He should point his finger where it belongs: federal Promise/etc money corrupting the nature of correction at the state and district level (with MY money) because, well, racism of course!

Anybody who thinks this is winning is dangerous to Freedom and, apparently now, should be locked up until Dewy Process maybe later falls in your lap.

For crying out loud, even Paul Ryan sounded more like a states’ rights federalist this week. While Trump totally grabbed his own freaking pussy.

Who cares if they already have a law. Make a new law that is the same as the old law. You are doing something. And if they point that out then you can make it a crime to not follow up on laws. Just don’t do nothing.

More laws aren't the issue. The authorities in Broward who liberals depend on to protect us wouldn't have done a thing. As to you can make it a crime to not follow up on laws I don't disagree. I hope the feds prosecute the mayor of Oakland for obstruction. There are laws regarding malfeasance, though removal is usually the solution. No one, including the Governor, seems to want to act on that. Civil liability would seem the be the best chance, but with judgements against the negligent individuals, not the taxpayers. Maybe some of FR's lawyers could fill in legal remedies. I doubt we need new laws. One possibly, protecting taxpayers from judgments due to gross negligence on the part of officials. I'll also note, these are and should be state issues. Beyond NICS I don't see any reason for federal involvement.

I think he was talking about this kid’s behavior that caused all those police visits but no criminal charges for any of the complaints.

Which in turn failed to have anything turn up on his background ck.

That is the context I heard.

If you say I’m crazy and I am not then you will have issues to face such as slander lawsuit and false arrest. But if I am crazy and armed then the guns have to be seized along with the cars keys and kids. The legal necessities can litigated later.

Crazy people wth guns have no right to due process before the guns are seized. I did not say crazy people had no rights to due process. Just like a drunk person with a car has no right to due process prior to seizing their keys.

We won’t agree if it becomes a federal issue.

There's a privacy issue as well. I'm not sure we want police peeking at people's mental health records without a court being involved.

Not sure how your state gets around that.

I agree. Years ago I used to post articles and comments on Illinois's bizarre mental health restrictions, since changed to conform to the Federal danger to self and others standard. They'd bar firearm ownership for five years for anyone who had inpatient mental health treatment. An alcoholic seeking inpatient treatment, non firearms for five years. There was an appeal process, time consuming. Unions took care of it for LEOs and such. No legal fees and not much time. But an alcoholic law enforcement officer could lose his job for seeking treatment. Unless he didn't seek treatment. Talk about a disincentive. PTSD imo is a big one potentially, I thought of that stupid ruling, which I thought the President was on the other side of. And not being able to handle finances doesn't correlate with being a danger. In fact most mental illness don't. The President needs to be much clearer on this than I don't want the mentally ill with firearms.

I wrote the same in another thread:

I’m not going to react to rhetoric spewed in conference with politicians, but my gut is still tight regardless.

Let’s keep our heads until we know more.
