When Coral Springs police officers arrived at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on February 14 in the midst of the school shooting crisis, many officers were surprised to find not only that Broward County Sheriff's Deputy Scot Peterson, the armed school resource officer, had not entered the building, but that three other Broward County Sheriff's deputies were also outside the school and had not entered, Coral Springs sources tell CNN. The deputies had their pistols drawn and were behind their vehicles, the sources said, and not one of them had gone into the school.

I completely understand the single cop with a pistol, when he recognized a semi-auto rifle with dozens of rounds fired, knowing he was outmatched.
But FOUR of them?
I have issue with that. Four had a plausible chance to take him out, coming from different approaches and angles.
The ONE cop would have been a suicide mission with near zero chance.
These are local policies. I'm certain (but have no time to look for the article now) that the Sheriff stated when suspending Peterson that policy was to immediately confront the shooter. Which he didn't. If you read the article you'll see that the Coral Springs police, different department and policies, entered the building. Joined by a Sunrise policeman, and two newly arrived Broward deputies. While others sheltered outside. My personal opinion, I think the sheriff lied about policy. The school deputy and the first arriving on the scene sheltered, that doesn't sound like a confront the shooter policy. And these policies aren't formulated to save the victims. Kudus to Coral Springs. I'll also note that as to an escape proof perimeter, Broward failed. Not criticizing the LEO in your family or his departments policies, thought I might disagree in many circumstances. But I think the Broward people are lying through their teeth.
Related, I realize police aren't military, but what happened to initiative. Is their no room for that in many departments policies.
Which includes a large chunk of the military.
If you cant be trusted to own a gun until your 21 then you should’t vote either....isnt that right Rick Scott?
Exactly. In any active crime scene the first job is to secure the perimeter and then wait for proper backup. People are naive to think a cop is going to slap on his bullet proof vest, and enter a scene where there is an active shooter.
You are correct in a typical outdoor battle situation where combatants are separated by hundreds of feet and have body armor. But in close quarters against a most likely untrained shooter a trained pistol operator, with body armor, should not be "outmatched".
My governor, who in an instant, has turned into an absolute putz!
That said, if he's going to try to do that, he might as well make it age 21 to get a driver's license. More people killed by cars than by guns! Stop the madness of young drivers!!!!
Coward County
The Nut doesn't fall far from the tree. Broward got what it voted for at election time.
That's exactly what we're examining Sheriff Israel said, noting that active shooter protocols require confronting suspects as quickly as possible. "You don't wait for SWAT, you get in and you push toward the shooter"
Asked what Mr Peterson should have done, Sheriff Israel said: "Went in, addressed the killer, killed the killer." Sheriff Israel said Mr Peterson had not given a reason for why he did not go into the building where the shooter was. It is unclear if he will face charges.
Really makes you think about Reagan’s nine most terrifying words in the English language: I’m from the Government, and I’m here to help. Little did he know.
Lots of Yankee transplants in Broward.
Scott Israel and Megan Barry are both on deathwatch jobwise
Yep
Wheres standard press conference where all the big cops and politicians salute each other for heroism and job well done
This is killing the gun confiscation route
Sorry libs
“Coward County”.... Right, you are!!
One or two SRO at every school where I live near Franklin TN
I think as of this they all have two now
Some are Iraq war combat vets and one I know I have no doubt would risk his life to save kids at the K-5 he protects
No doubt att all
But some only had a chubby woman deputy...who spent her time in the front office chatting with fellow chubby women
I was not impressed
Like I said
There are two now all schools here
We can harden our schools which is a good start
If I wielded the AR or AK, he’d not survive his entry.
And if any private citizen opens fire on the perp - that citizen ends up in jail.
What a gov’t!
I just tweeted this, but so far no one has brought up the Uber driver.
A kid with an AR-15 and a bag of ammo gets into your car and asks to be taken to a SCHOOL? And the driver takes him?
This will bankrupt the company. The lawsuit will destroy the driver-—I don’t care what caveats the company insurance policies have-—and Uber is finished when the ambulance chasers are done with them.
You forgot to mention Uncle Joe Biden whose "Safe Schools Act" created the target rich environment of "gun free zones" from coast to coast.
We have to pin this tale on that jackass.
