Half of Puerto Rico’s housing was built illegally. Then came Hurricane Maria.

I will be the first in line to give support to Puerto Rican independence as a country.

We could even give it some start-up $ like a sports franchise.

Lease a bunch of land to give them income and us a military presence.

Everyone wins!

>>and send them some code inspectors<<

To do what? Red tag the whole island?

This is typical Latino street pragmatism. It is in the culture.

I know that as my wife is from Mexico and I see the same there constantly.

Guessing none of the numerous government employees lost a substandard out of code house. Paying for the government employees keeps everyone else poor.

Funny. Most houses in Manila get destroyed by an average 3-5 typhoons per year (and people die) but you dont see them bitching about it. Nor do they need stupid charity concerts, benefits etc. They just rebuild unlike these clowns...

I agree. The system isn’t exactly broken. It’s how they want it to be, to some extent.

I’ve spent some time in the Caribbean. Frankly, I find it depressing because of the disparity between the Haves and the Have-Nots. Also, everytime I’ve been to one of the islands, I’ve had a cheerful native laugh at me (in a good-natured way) because Americans work too hard and don’t know how to enjoy life the way people in the islands do.

Fine.

Enjoy your house.

Puerto Ricans are not Black Africans! But Puerto Rico really pretty much like most of the rest of the world, and if we continue to let “the rest of the world” show up here as we have for the most part of the last 50 years or more, America will soon join the long list of $hit hole countries, we’ve prided ourselves in not being.

<>The island’s building codes are, on paper at least, the equal of Florida’s vaunted windstorm rules.<>

Wanna build anywhere near the FL coast? Count on a minimum expense of $180 per square foot of living space.

Faced with full knowledge they were about to go bankrupt, Puerto Rico voted to become a state about a year ago.
If Clinton had been elected, they’d be our 51st state and the rest of us would be footing this repair bill along with all their other bills.

Trump hinted at all this when dealing with that idiot mayor. He couldn’t open up all the way because of the human tragedy factor. This is what he does. Throws out a hint of whats to come. They used to be able to predict what politicians would do, i.e. play the game, but not Trump. They know he’ll expose them and their deep corruption.

I could watch this play out over and over and never tire of it.

God Bless President Trump.
