NYPD Commissioner: ‘Insanity’ to Allow National Concealed Carry for Law-Abiding Citizens

New York Police Department commissioner James O’Neill says it is “insanity” to allow national concealed carry reciprocity for law-abiding citizens.

He suggested more guns will only lead to more violence, although a 2012 Congressional Research Service study showed that a massive increase in private gun ownership–from 192 million firearms in 1994 to 310 million firearms in 2009–correlated with sharp drops in crime.

Moreover, the Crime Prevention Research Center (CRPC) has shown that concealed carry permit holders are among the most law-abiding of law-abiding citizens. To highlight how just how law-abiding concealed carriers are CPRC juxtaposed crimes by police versus crimes by concealed carry permit holders. They used Texas permit holders as their sample

“but because there are a multitude of everyday confrontations in large cities from traffic accidents to arguing over a parkjng space that they fear could turn deadly if one or both are carrying.”

Like the other gun-grabber arguments, this one is false.

I am much less likely to get into a shouting match when I am carrying. Ego is not on the line, and there is always that voice in my head: is this worth somebody’s life?

When I was in my 20s and went out drinking, there was always the possibility of a fight. When I’m carrying, I’m walking away.

“Any bill that passes will likely be struck down on 10th Amendment grounds.”

It is not a 10th Amendment issue. Note the phrase “nor prohibited by it to the States”.

“The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”

He suggested more guns will only lead to more violence...

And, of course, Commissioner O'Neill is very careful to back up his statement with numerous surveys and studies that back up his assertion*.

*assertion: a declaration that is made emphatically (as if no supporting evidence were necessary).

Most large city LEOs are opposed to carrying. Not for some nefarious desire to control the people, but because there are a multitude of everyday confrontations in large cities from traffic accidents to arguing over a parkjng space that they fear could turn deadly if one or both are carrying.

Its a specious argument. NY City itself went from about 450 murders in 1960, to 2200+ murders in 1990, then down to 290 in 2017. That is all while it has had the strictest gun control laws in the nation. Clearly, many other factors are at play.

When did that change? I left NY in 2013 and was told by multiple bosses when I transferred from Troop B (Plattsburgh) to Troop K, that I was not under any circumstances to carry in the city.

Not too sure that it would...What reasons would there be?

The Supreme Court ruled in the Heller decision, and reaffirmed it in the McDonald v. Chicago decision, that reasonable fire arms restrictions are permissible and within the state's authority to enact.

Agree. If law abiding citizens always carried the number of dead/wounded LEO’s would decline fast.

They must be reasonable.

That rules out an outbright ban on guns or a may issue gun control regime.

A gun control law must have a valid relationship to securing public safety.

NY’s gun control law doesn’t pass that test.

2004 with the signing of LEOSA.

A lot of down state commanders didn’t want their people doing it, but it is by no means illegal. NYSP policy maybe ? But not law.

Now days, uniformed troopers are pulling daily duty in GCT and Penn Station. Hell, they’re doing traffic stops on the west side highway now. Never thought I’d see that.

Strange times in NY. You got out just in time.
And sorry about jumping your shit.

If you love having politicians whether you can keep a gun, then gun control laws are right up your alley.

Only problem with it is those politicians and their friends make sure their laws don’t apply to them.

Every citizen should be able to protect themselves and their family from criminals as necessary wherever they are. It also sinks the hopes of an armed Leftist takeover.

The Commish is absolutely right on this one.

Does anyone have any idea what kind of chaos would ensue if legally armed, law abiding, qualified firearm owners were allowed to carry weapons into the various enclaves and strongholds of federal judges, Democrat pols, and broadcast news figures?

Yep! Here in the soviet state of MD is the classic example.

There is this "ghost like" concealed-carry law. It appears in reality only for politicians, families of politicians, high-dollar contributors (and families) to politicians, and activists (SJWs) who support the politicians.

They *are* untouchable. The 2nd even re-affirms with ‘...shall NOT be infringed.’.

But, govt being govt, and The People, being the dumb asses most of ‘em are, have abused/tramped and usurped w/o a whimper of protest.

Sadly, as History has shown time and time again, Freedom, once lost, is never readily returned w/o bloodshed.

And they’re afraid, really afraid. That’s the reason for all those inane laws that doesn’t do anything they want it to.

Wanna hear something even worse? If you are Police Officer, employed outside of the five boroughs, you can not carry a firearm within the five boroughs. If you are a Yonkers PD officer and want to take your family to Radio City to see the Christmas show, you cannot legally be armed. You can be a New York State Trooper and be assigned to Troop L, on Long Island and cannot carry legally in the city. Guys took their duty weapons with them, so if they got hassled, NYPD would have to explain to the Bosses of their agencies, why they took the weapons.

That is worse? In what way? Please explain what you mean by that. Frankly, if I can't be armed, they should not be able to be armed either. I think it's great that a New York State Trooper actually gets treated (in theory anyway) just like one of us lowly peons.

I wonder what this f***ing turdburglar NYPD Commissioner would do if a thousand of us showed up carrying.

This is our Constitutional Right. No matter what this dickless bag of feces thinks.

And I don’t his “permission” to carry.
