40 Percent of All US Childbirths Occur to Single Mothers, 700 Percent Higher than in 1960
A recent report from the Social Capital Project reveals that the American family is disintegrating, fast. Fully 40 percent of mothers are currently unmarried.
This is bad news, because good families depend on good marriages. Marriage is the moral glue that binds them. Its the stabilizing agent. Theres a reason that children from married couples do better in school, and are less likely to end up in jail as compared to children of unmarried mothers, known as fragile families.
Lavar Young, civil rights activist, thinks marriage is a powerful tool for fighting against racial inequality. He outlines some of the problems children born out of wedlock face:
Fragile families are shown to have harsher parenting practices and fewer literacy activities, and children of such families produce lower cognitive test scores and a have a higher incidence of aggressive behavior.
Children are not the only ones who suffer, according to Mr. Young:
compared with traditional families, parents of fragile families are more likely to have become parents in their teens, more likely to have had children with other partners, more likely to be poor, suffer from depression, struggle with substance abuse, and to have been incarcerated.
When it comes to raising successful children, the importance of married parents cannot be overstated. On balance, married parents set better examples, and foster more stable relationships and environments that better prepare children for adult life. This is eloquently put by the authors at the Social Capital Project:

Remember its a village! Single parenting is promoted
These kids kids are having kids with brothers sisters moms dads etc. Pay back time is around the corner.
Read a statistic last week.
Only 5% of two parent black families are in poverty.
Nothing worse for kids than being born a bastard.
The girls in my office pick crappy men, get pregnant, guy leaves, mom and baby get govt benefits. Poor kids grow up in daycare.
It pisses my ol’ lady off when I say this: No matter how much you hated them George Wallace and Lester Maddox foretold the future we now occupy. Not saying they were always right but they were dead on about where our society would be today.
Nowhere mentioned in the article, is the break-down by race.
Its an important issue.
Certain segments of our society are much worse than others with regard to this issue. So what do the presenters of this information do? They refuse to address the worse players in our society.
Then they try to tell us, despite this, that they really want to focus on the issue, so well change for the better.
Sure.
Single motherhood is one of the best predictors of poverty.
I read something close to that a few months back. The article I read referenced it being about 10% instead of 5%, but the glaring difference if both parents are in the home is undeniable.
There is no good reason for the poverty that is there today in the Black neighborhoods.
Uncle same turned out to be a very destructive member of the family.
Nor is age. Biggest increase is in older mothers. Late 20s and up. These aren’t teens who aren’t thinking straight. These are adults who are planning on single parenting.
Being a single mom is the number one cause of poverty in the US.
Oh ... never mind.
At least these single Mommas are not disposing of their babies to abortion but I have a feeling a good portion of these children are Amish types anyway.
Yeah, if only someone had called out that Murphy Brown character back in the 80's...
With anti family attitude of TV it will get larger. After all the Kruschev (communist) agenda said they would ruin the American family.
I’m going to argue against myself a bit here. Yes some of the women are choosing to have kids out of wedlock until they are eight to ten years older. I realize that. It would be my guess, they are probably more upwardly mobile though, and if so wouldn’t contribute so much to the idea children born out of wedlock would necessarily be born in poverty.
I believe there are still a lot of kids having babies at more traditional ages, add a few years.
Then there are those who have kids much younger in the inner cities.
My wife and I were on vacation on day years ago. I believe the show was Oprah of all things, and the topic of the day was mothers who want their young children to get pregnant. There were three or four moms on the program with 12-13 year old children, professing to want them to be pregnant.
That was disgusting to me. It should have been illegal also.
I think kids need two parents in the home, a mom and a dad. This is the most healthy environment, despite what others are trying to scam the public with these days.
So age isn’t the only concern. The monetary status isn’t the total issue either.
Thanks for bringing up the issue of age, and (poor, in my view) choices by older women.
I think Dan Quayle did that.
Come on now...
...where is the RACIAL data??
