WASHINGTON - The head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement wants the Justice Department to prosecute mayors and other political leaders in so-called "sanctuary cities" that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
"We need to hold these politicians accountable for their actions," Thomas Homan told Fox News. "This isn't the America I grew up in. We got to take these sanctuary cities on. We got to take them to court. And we got to start charging some of these politicians with crimes."
Such a policy would dramatically raise the stakes for immigrant-friendly cities and states that have clashed with the administration. The ACLU said Wednesday that Homan's "outrageous threat" should disqualify him from leadership of the agency that enforces immigration law.
Homan insisted that President Donald Trump shares his view.
A number of Texas cities, including Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Austin -- all led by Democrats -- have resisted Trump's hardline approach to immigration, prompting a state law aimed at pressuring local jurisdictions.
Leaders in those cities would presumably be targeted under Homan's approach. Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo told the Houston Chronicle that the federal threat smacked of an incursion against "states' rights and local rights."

The statute Homan cited makes it an offense for any person "to conceal, harbor, or shield from detection, such alien in any place, including any building or any means of transportation."
BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!
Don’t threaten. Just arrest their sorry asses already.
I thought the “state’s rights” argument went away after George Wallace lost the schoolhouse door fight.
Enforce existing laws and prosecute people who violate them?
Is that allowed?
How exactly is it an ;outrageous threat’ when they are not complying with federal law? Hold them SOBs accountable for their outrageous political act of declaring a ‘sanctuary’ city!
the legislators in these cities should be the targets (including mayors where appropriate).
“Such a policy would dramatically raise the stakes for immigrant-friendly cities and states that have clashed with the administration.”
Illegal immigrant-friendly.
Fixed it.
If that's what the scumbags at the aclu think of it, then this would be a priori an outstanding policy implementation by the Administration !
I remember when that county clerk from Ky refused to issue gay marriage licenses a Federal judge threatened to hold her in contempt and have her arrested. The left didn’t have any problem wit that. Very analogous situation.
INVADER friendly
Fixed it better ;-)
The corrupt courts would side with the sanctuary cities, while condemning cities and states which pass laws to mitigate the illegal immigration problem as “federal purview.”
“Dont threaten. Just arrest their sorry asses already.”
Yes.
Don’t show your hand, just do it.
They did not say it was illegal or unconstitutional.
They said it was outrageous.
One of Carlson’s guests was talking about this last evening. IMO, send in the US Marshals and arrest the entire legislature of the state or municipality doing this.
I believe that Lincoln arrested part of the Maryland legislature to stop them from voting for secession along with some other officials.
That’s a nice reference, but they could just as well charge obstruction of justice or impeding a federal official.
It’s only logical. Lawbreakers should be arrested and prosecuted. That’s the way the system is supposed to work. New slogan: Make the System Work Again.
“The corrupt courts would side with the sanctuary cities”
Not even the ACL friggin’ U believes it is illegal or unconstitutional.
raise the stakes for immigrant-friendly cities...
I thought Dallas papers were conservative?
