The deal the worker struck was simple: $150 a day to tile a bathroom and stucco the walls of a home in Arcadia. The pay was to come at the end of each day but never did, according to a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court by the California labor commissioner.
After six days with no pay, the lawsuit alleges, the worker finally confronted his boss, who then snapped, called him a wetback and threatened to report him to immigration authorities.
Let me share something with you, not only am I [an ex]-sheriff, my family are all in the police department, the lawsuit says the boss wrote in a follow-up text message after refusing to pay the worker. You want to come to my job & create a issue, I will handcuff you take you into custody & wait for I.C.E to come take you in for felony threats.
The employer could not be reached for comment, but the claim is increasingly common. Complaints over immigration-related retaliation threats surged last year in California, according to the Labor Commissioners Office. Through Dec. 22, workers had filed 94 immigration-related retaliation claims with the office, up from 20 in all of 2016 and only seven a year earlier.
The cases include instances in which employers allegedly threatened to report workers to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, after they raised issues over working conditions, including wage theft. Other allegations include employers demanding different documents than those required by federal immigration law or refusing to honor documents that appear genuine.

I agree. Such is the mess that we have.
Easy solution Andrew Khouri ... send all illegals home.
Fine employers $10,000 per illegal. Then give 20% of money collected as fines to the illegal who turned their employers in - AND voluntarily left the country.
How many illegal-alien invaders
does it take to shingle a roof?
three
if you slice them thin.
bah-dump-bump. rimshot
Thanks again.
Yes. It’s a distorted article. The article gives the impression a homeowner did what is claimed, made the threat about ICE.
” the homeowner”
What homeowner?
LA Times....paywall
This.
If the worker were not here illegally, then all of this would be a moot point.
The poor LAT staff. They just can’t grasp rather simple subject matter.
Illegals don’t belong here. Threatening to follow the laws of our nation is actually giving them a pass. The employer should call, not threaten.
I do get the abuse aspect here, and in addition to loathing the employer for hiring these people, I also loathe them for coercion. We’re talking some pretty low life people here.
While I don’t want illegals here, while they are here they deserve to be treated humanely. I do not want to see them subjected to crime. Still, they did open themselves up to this.
This is my number two reason for not wanting illegals here. They are subjected to blackmail/crime.
More bosses need to have their businesses raided by ICE.
Just more Fake News.
While this may or may not be true, the reason why this is Fake News is because it furthers the anti-Trump agenda as it tries to soft soap the poor illegals who Trump wants to deport. (sarc)
As with all the types of stories - The TDS is strong here. Very strong.
The U.S. needs to start a Dont Let This Happen To YOU! advertising campaign high lighting horror stories about the unfortunate things that can happen to foreigners who invade our country illegally (especially stories of families being broken up by deportation).
The ads need to be put online, and also broadcast in as many problematic countries as possible.
Exactly right.
It’s not news it’s propaganda. Take these two paragraphs. Completely superfluous, but point to the motivation for the article - to make Trump, his supporters or even just non-detractors, look bad.
Su declined to single out a source of the anti-immigrant rhetoric. But President Trump has railed against illegal and legal immigration during the 2016 campaign and his presidency, often citing crime, including terrorism, as a reason for his stance, even though a number of studies show immigrants generally are less likely to commit crimes than those born in the U.S..
Trump has even compared immigrants to snakes when he to adoring crowds read the lyrics to a song titled The Snake in which a tender hearted woman took in a sickly snake, only for her to be shocked when it bit her.
There.
Fixed it.
THE ABSOLUTE MORONS STILL CAN'T ACCEPT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LEGAL AND ILLEGAL WORKERS.!
Pay the agreed wages. To do less is immoral and unethical. It is stealing. Illegal status a secondary issue.
Can you elaborate on that?
Crucial relevant facts are missing...
Starting with : what was your answer?
All this article is, is an attack on Trump and Trump supporters once again making them (us) out to be evil, racist, bigoted white privileged stuck up morons. This article is simply another “hit piece” on the honest hardworking citizens of this country. It has [really] gone beyond old and tiring.
In my (not personal!) experience, most are.
Also, in my experience, most are also illegal.
mmm, I am guessing since this is in a sanctuary state, the only one who would be in trouble would be the homeowner. After all, reporting to ICE would not accomplish anything. But, the extortion texts could make things messy. The “undocumented immigrant (blech)” is the poor innocent that Pelosi et al will protect.
IMO both parties are scum but the biggest scum of all is the state.
Yep..... : )
