.....The struggling sandwich chain has seen customer traffic plummet a whopping 25 percent over the past five years....
In a Nov. 30 memo to franchisees that revealed the stomach-churning drop, Subways owners promised $25 million to boost marketing this spring for the companys 44,000 locations and to bring back a limited-time, $4.99 footlong sandwich promotion.....
....the crucial footlong deal aimed squarely at the McDonalds dollar menu is in danger because of a revolt by franchise owners, who fret that doubling down on discounts will further shave their already thin profits.
More than 400 of them have signed a petition protesting the two-month footlong deal thats slated to begin in January....

My son had some surgery yesterday. The hospital food court has a Subway and a couple other placed I’d never heard of. I ended up with just the normal hospital cafeteria which was just OK.
Funny thing is, John Hopkins Hospital has gone full Nanny Bloomberg. You can only buy diet soft drinks. I was griping about that with one of the nurses and she said it’s shocking how a medical institution like Hopkins is more interested in sucking up to the food Nazi culture rather than seeing how bad for the body artificial sweeteners are. They keep a secret stash of Coca-Cola at the nurses station and she gave me one.
He’ll likely be in the hospital till Saturday so I may have some more hospital meals.
They haven’t seriously evolved their food. When they showed up they were a breath of fresh (and kind of healthy) air in the fastfood market and some of the best food in the market. But that was 20 years ago and fastfood has evolved to fast casual and they’re still selling the same stuff the same way and are no longer near the top.
And Ghassans. How could I have forgot about their steak sub?
The reason Subway is off our list of food stops is we tried to eat at three various Subway stores in different towns over multiple years, and we never got served. We got ignored.
They hire kids to run the places, and when we walked in the kids would disappear. We’d wait at the counter for someone to tend to our order, but they’d either hold a meeting in the corner away from us, or just ignore us as though we weren’t there until we walked out. Which we did, and finally now after twenty, or so years read this article, and to us it’s a no brainer the company is in trouble.
Hoosegow......................
I started avoiding Subway when they started serving halal meats; meaning NO sanitary standards in the slaughterhouse. I later learned it’s only at certain stores. But since I don’t know which is which, I take no chances. Catering to ragheads irks me, too.
I noticed their meats had become almost flavorless. The rolls are too much like bread in a bag. I have a nice classic old Italian deli near me. I will gladly pay twice the price for real dry cured meats and cheese, a nice crusty roll, and a sandwich made by someone without surgery gloves.
Trust me, you need them wearing the gloves. You probably DO have an idea where their hands have been...
I like the response towards Subway from some friends of ours visiting from France. “How can Americans buy and enjoy food from the same place they buy gasoline to put in their car?”
It could be.
It was garbage food when it first came out and it only got worse.
Jersey Mike’s is good, Nice solid crusty bread and a little too much meat. Only thing I can’t stand is shredded lettuce.
They wouldn’t say that if they’d gone to Buc-ee’s.
I have a friend that owns several Subway franchises.
She says that it is impossible to make any money owning just one. At two she cleared about $25K a year. With three she makes about $50K.
A lot has to do with the inventory you are forced to purchase and how much you pay for it. She can shift supplies and food from store to store to make it work, but even then she still has to hit up a supermarket now and then for basics she runs out of and can’t get replacements in time. Supposedly if she is caught doing this she could have her franchise yanked.
My wife and sister both looked into getting a Subway franchise at different times. Thankfully they both had a stroke of sanity before doing so!
Jersey Mikes rules!
Probably the same as what one of my kids used to call Chicken McNuggets - “feets and beaks...”
+1 for Firehouse Subs
Jarrod lost weight on subway mostly lettuce sandwiches.
Jersy Mike’s, Mike’s way is a better sandwich
The JM mini is plenty for me for lunch
Switched to Lenny’s a while back - tastes/chews better to me....
Im a New Yorker and I miss Wawa, although Nice n Easy is pretty good too.
That’s not a real ad, right, photoshop? 7 free? no way...
That too! Thanks for the reminder.
See, that’s why I like FR. During the Oblowme administration, there was so much absolute CRAP that was thrown on the American people from all lib sides that we tend to forget some of it. Other FReepers always find a way to jog my memory!
Love to you all and keep up the good work!
