How McConnell kept Republicans in line to win Senate tax bill

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - When Republicans tried to repeal and replace Obamacare over the summer, they acted like “a bunch of free range chickens", said Republican Senator John Kennedy. "Everybody was upset, tired, mad, people drawing lines in the dirt."

Not this time. Republican leader Mitch McConnell and the rest of his party's Senate leadership brought party members into line this week and finally won passage of a sweeping tax overhaul early on Saturday.

Late arm-twisting and deal-sweeteners for wavering lawmakers allowed them to push through legislation that aims to slash corporate taxes and cut personal taxes.

They repealed Obamacare with this deal. If the individual mandate stays in the final bill we get a twofer. I’m hopeful and trust Trump. Whatever the final package is, he’ll get tax reform, Obamacare and the wall done in one shot.

...said Republican Senator John Kennedy.

I still do a double-take every time I read that. Isn't he the new guy from Louisiana that replaced Vitter the Quitter?

As for the tax bill, I'm gigged. I knew there would have to be compromises to get it through the Senate but this has to go through reconciliation with the more conservative House version and also it proves that Trump can get important legislation through Congress.

If Trump survives to 2019, we should have new fresh blood for Corker, Flake and a few others and we may yet slay ObamaCare. Patience, folks.

Pffft. They’re uniparty. The donors said “pass it or else” and the illustrious senators know which side their bread is buttered on. Chuck Schumer could have hotten this passed.

I remain skeptical until the House & Senate versions of the problem (er, bill) are resolved.

The official name; H.R.1 - Tax Cuts and Jobs Act

I don’t know how the numbering works but 2-4 are reserved for the speaker and they’re up to H.R.4259 now.

Still, H.R.1 is fitting since it’s the only major thing Congress has done for an entire year. Worthless people

During reconciliation anything is possible. Yeehaaah! Time to mount up and rope them in.

FWIW, something weird was reported this AM. It’s that the individual mandate remains but the penalties will not be enforced. I don’t like that, not at all. If the individual mandate is in place, all it would take is a Democratic majority or even near majority (because of the number of “Republicans” who are really dems) to start charging the fine again.

I enjoyed paying the fine. A small cost for freedom.

Nice to know even congress have masters..When they say jump, the RINOS jumped....Huge win with the tax bill...Maybe the donors knew the “ little people” wouldn’t be giving repubs a dime and it would be all their money down the rabbit hole...

Mitch had $400 billion in walking around money. Business as usual in Congress.

Spit.

I suspect you’re right, and it’s sad. However, in the end this is the Senate we have to work with, and the final bill will be way better than the alternative.

Nonsense.

The fear of Bannon and Trump voters kept the GOP Senate in line.

I am praying for the individual mandate to stay in the final bill. That would be the biggest win for America since Ronald Reagan was in office.
