PYATIGORSK, November 17. /TASS/. Pharmacologists from southern Russia are launching clinical tests for a new painkiller that outperforms morphine in effectiveness but does not cause addiction. Department head of the Volgograd State Medical University, and RAS Member Alexander Spasov told TASS about this innovative medical breakthrough on Friday in Pyatigorsk. READ ALSO
Russia may legalize cultivation of narcotic plants for medical purposes "Together with our colleagues from the South Federal University, we created a drug which still has no specific name but is only referred to as RU-1205. Based on its effect, it outperforms such well-known painkillers as morphine and promedol and does not cause addictive side effects. Now, a full round of preclinical studies has been completed, and we are negotiating with two plants that are supposed to bankroll clinical research and initiate industrial production.

“Non-addictive.”
We’ve all heard that one before.

Since I’m allergic to morphine, nice to know. Hopefully I won’t be in any need of the stuff.

Does it have euphoric side effects? Does it cause constipation? Is it toxic in usage or moderate abuse?
If answers to the above are Yes, No, and No, coupled with non-addictive properties, it sounds like a soma candidate.

Heroin was synthesized to try to find a non addicting version of morphine.
Kinda backfired...

Apparently being allergic to morphine is pretty common. My dad was given some at the ER once and he had severe chest pains from it. He thought he was having a heart attack.

One of the reasons people get addicted to pain killers is that the best ones create a sense of euphoria. If this drug does the same I can’t imagine it being non-addictive.

Re #10:
I’m on the other end of the spectrum from your Father. I love morphine. If it was legal I’d be an addict. I have no doubt of this.

I recall when cocaine use was increasing in the late 1970’s.
Many stories said the same thing: non-addictive, benign drug.
Hard to tell how it might be abused until it has been in wide use for a while.
