Dan Rather Laments That Americans Think the Media ‘Make Up Stories’

Former CBS journalist Dan Rather appeared on NBC "Today" on Tuesday where he lamented on the American people's lack of trust in the media.
"There’s a recent poll that said nearly half of people think the media make up stories," host Savannah Guthrie noted. "The media itself is under fire."
"What do you think the media needs to do better to enhance its own credibility?" she asked.
"We need to do a better job, we need to do our job. Our job is to bear witness, to be honest brokers of information, to be as accurate and fair as we possibly can," Rather said.
"I think most of the public understands that we’re under attack by very powerful people, including the president, for their own partisan, political, and ideological reasons," he concluded.
Rather infamously resigned as the anchor of "CBS Evening News" after going to air with a story only two months before the 2004 election claiming that then-candidate George W. Bush often went AWOL while serving in the Texas National Guard.

Well, Rather IS an expert on making up fake news stories: after all, making up fake news stories was why he was fired as national news anchor.
In PA Dutch Country, there’s a word the older folks used that means about the same as cheek, or nerve, or chutzpah. My parents used it. That word is “crust”. Upon reading the headline, I instantly thought, “Dan Rather really has a lot of crust, bringing up THAT subject!

"We apologize to our viewers and to General Motors. We have also concluded that unscientific demonstrations should have no place in hard news stories at NBC. That's our new policy.
In its apology, NBC admitted that it had used incendiary devices to ensure that a fire would erupt if gasoline leaked from the truck being hit by a test car. The 15-minute segment was addressing critics' charges that GM's full-size pickup trucks built between 1973 and 1987 are unsafe because their gasoline tanks are on the sides of the trucks, outside the frame.
