Full title:
Stephen Willeford, 55, grabbed his own rifle and rushed to confront Devin Kelley after being told an attack was underway by his daughter.
As he arrived outside the church he came face-to-face with Kelley.
Mr Willeford, a plumber with no military experience, shot him in the side through a gap in his body armour, forcing the killer to flee.
Mr Willeford and another passing resident, Johnnie Langedorff, then chased him at almost 100 miles per hour in a car as the wounded killer tried to make a getaway after taking a hostage.
Kelley is said to have killed 26 people including a child aged five when he stormed into the church on Sunday dressed in black tactical gear and armed with an assault rifle.
Freeman Martin, regional director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, said: The suspect dropped his rifle, which was a Ruger AR assault-type rifle, and fled from the church. The man then chased the gunman.
Mr Langedorff said: He got a little bit of a jump on us. So we were doing about 95 miles per hour, going around traffic and everything.
He just lost control and thats whenever I put the vehicle in park. The other gentleman jumped out and had his rifle drawn on him and he didnt move after that.
Kelley was found a short distance away in his crashed vehicle, dead from a bullet wound. He had several more guns in his car, but the hostage was unhurt.
Police are still trying to establish whether Kelley died from Mr Willefords shot, or if he committed suicide.

Speaking at a news conference in Japan, Mr Trump said: Fortunately somebody else had a gun that was shooting in the opposite direction, otherwise it would have been as bad as it was it would have been much worse.

He [mass murderer Devin Kelley] served in logistics readiness at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico, and was jailed for one year in 2012 on two counts alleging assault on his wife Danielle Shields and their child.
In 2014, he was kicked out of the military.
Old school friends described Kelley, who lived in nearby New Braunfels, Texas, as a creep who made no secret of his anti-religious views.
Nina Rose Nava, who went to school with Kelley, said: He was always talking about how people who believe in God were stupid and trying to preach his atheism.
On Kelleys Facebook page, he appeared to have a fascination with guns. He had recently shared a photo of an AR-15 style gun with the caption: Shes a bad b***h.
Kelleys mother-in-law, Michelle Shields, is understood to be a parishioner at the First Baptist Church and was friends on social media with First Baptist Pastor Frank Pomeroy and his wife.
There have been rumors about child porn but no idea based on what. Probably not true.
They are often bred not born
But some are born
He looks like he’s projecting anger to intimidate
Which usually means scared inside
Humanity has always had nutz who kill
You can almost always find commonality in upbringing but by the time you see it for what it is it’s too late
I’ve got five kids and watch other kids grow up
What creates this I can’t. Honestly say besides Satan
Frequently abused as a kid
But some folks are just born bad ...I know behaviorlalists don’t like that notion
Useta could...
"Get 3 coffins ready..."
"My mistake... Make that 4 coffins."
Don’t plan on ever going to church, keeping a rifle in my hands during the sermon. People carry pistols because rifles are tough to stuff in a waistband.
If the guy has head to toe high quality body armor, tackling him will do more than shooting him - and he probably won’t move so good in all that armor. If he has a vest, try for the legs or head. As body armor becomes more common, the typical advice to aim for center of mass might need to be changed.
And from what I’ve read, this guy opened fire through the church walls for starters. Not certain of that, but some reports say so.
Yep. Baptist MIL and the entire congregation really missed him off
Nobody is stating anything that you are saying in your straw man.
What you are saying is not relevant to this case as this was a 100% justifiable shooting.
Soft body armor is now available that *can* stop some rifle fire without plates, FYI.
My AR is a Ruger brand
You have missed the posts that say in Texas you can kill a killer no matter what. If you live in Texas and you believe that you could find yourself on the wrong end of a Murder charge.
I am responding that it is not true that you can kill a kill NO MATTER WHAT as I have been told.
And if Plumber shot him at the crash scene the circumstances would weigh in...
Apparently, driver said there were no movements from Perp and Plumber did not fire a shot.
That would be acceptable circumstances.
He did not get off, did he?
And used to being involved in all kinds of sh|tty situations!
“But Texas judges have consistently refused to instruct juries about this statute, resulting in criminal convictions for doing just that. And judges refusals have been consistently upheld by the Texas Supreme Court
Isn’t it about time to get the USSC involved? That is patent corruption.
I think he has to wait; along with the rest of us; to get to that point.

At the very least, they should be protected via a Citizen's Arrest:
A person can arrest someone that they reasonably suspect of committing a felony, even if the felony didnt occur in the presence of the individual making the arrest. As long as a felony was actually committed and the individual making the arrest knew of the crime, a reasonable suspicion about the identity of the perpetrator will justify their arrest....
Other states allow people making a citizens arrest to use deadly force to stop a fleeing arrestee as long as the person making the arrest used reasonable methods in order to make the arrest. Some states go further and require that the person using deadly force first attempt to restrain the subject of the arrest, and other states require pursuit and an explicitly stated intent to arrest before using deadly force.
Actually, I want to take a look at the claim later to see if true..because it would be problematic
