As many as 200 North Korean labourers have been killed after a mine shaft being dug at the regime's nuclear test site collapsed, according to Japan's Asahi TV.
Sources in North Korea told the news channel that a tunnel being excavated by around 100 workers at the Punggye-ri test site collapsed earlier this month.
An additional 100 labourers sent to rescue their colleagues were reportedly killed when the tunnel suffered a second collapse.
An exact date for the disaster has not been provided, but it comes shortly after North Korea conducted its sixth - and most powerful - underground nuclear test at the site.
North Korea claims the September 3 test beneath Mount Mantap was of a hydrogen bomb, with monitors suggesting the detonation was equivalent to an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale.
Some analysts put the yield of the weapon as high as 280 kilotons, while seismologists picked up signs of underground collapses in the hours and days after the blast.
Satellite images of the Punngye-ri site taken immediately after the test revealed significant damage to surface features, including landslips.

Then we would be blamed for the radioactive contamination of northeast Asia
more likely....2000 dead
Hey kim....what could possibly go wong.
Isn’t just digging into a radioactive test site a death sentence in itself?
Who was supposed to order the support girders??
Barney; we may have a problem here...
It will also bead into Russia. In fact, prevailing winds will generally move the cloud to the sea and Russia.
No. No, it won't affect the program at all.
The ones killed are the (somewhat, not quite-innocent) ignorant laborers and soldiers and their guards and officers digging the tunnel in the radioactive dirt and rock. They can be replaced within hours by more starving, ignorant, soldiers and slaves.
The generals, the “scientists” and - most especially - the government leaders directing the project were nowhere near the tunnel site. Obviously, we might have gotten lucky and somebody was touring the dig site in the tunnel. But so you really think the leaders would go underground into the radioactivity, dirt, and discomfort just to look around?
Assuming the number of rescuer's that died is reported as true, there had to have been a least a few senior level military involved in the initial collapse. Probably conducting inspections.
Probably senior nuclear scientists as well.
More likely, the device was at the end of the tunnel that collapsed.
That WOULD force a “rescue” effort, and WOULD delay the program by the time to build the next weapon.
The tunnel still has to be dug, I doubt it was a rescue operation, more like second shift. They are communist peons, they have little value for their leadership.
If they thought their top nuclear scientists were trapped inside...you think they’d write them off so quickly?
Acceptable communist losses ...... Kims nukes kill NORK’s !!
kim jong un asked upon hearing the news “Is the tunnel ok?”
Good point. Why would you want to save 100+ slave laborers. But if it was slave laborers, then my guess is they were stealing the wood shoring components for fire wood or to eat. The 100 or so who died were trying to get to the others to pick their pockets.
What a lucky coincidence. Divine providence went to work.
I hope the crew of the B2 had a nice dinner on the way back to Missouri.
