In an interview with The Sunday Times, singer Sam Smith says that he considers himself gender non-binary. Now, normal people probably don't know what that is, but it basically means that he refuses to choose between being a man or a woman. Hence the "non-binary." It's neither either/or, it's "and."
To prove that he's "non-binary," Smith points out that he loves him some high heels and fur coats:
"I've got loads of heels at home...
"People don't know this, but when I was 17, I remember becoming obsessed with Boy George and Marilyn, and all that. There was one moment in my life where I didn't own a piece of male clothing, really. I would wear full make-up every day in school, eyelashes, leggings with Dr Martens and huge fur coats, for 2.5 years...
"I don't know what the title would be, but I feel just as much woman as I am man."
Right.
Now, that may sound nice and all to the loony left, but folks with at least a modicum of common sense understand that Smith is full of it. As Dana Loesch says on Twitter:

There is this strange concept prevalent in leftist circles nowadays that all those things that were once considered "prejudices" ("women have to wear and love high heels and make-up") have suddenly become proof of being a woman ("people who wear and love high heels and make-up are per definition female"). Here I was thinking that leftists hated such "gender norms." Apparently, no longer. They now embrace them, but only if they can be used to further their gender-hating agenda.

I believe you have hit on the whole crux of the matter. The idea was to increase his exposure. Now people are supposed to go sample his music and, hopefully, buy it. At some point, all marketing tricks get old and fail. Society will move on to something else.
The question is, when does bad “liberal only” marketing hurt you? The woman who Tweeted a photo with Trump’s severed head comes to mind. It was pure liberal marketing and it destroyed what I will, charitably, call her career.

He sang the massive hit “Stay With Me” which was found to be a palgiarism of Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down.”
Under normal circumstances, and a sane world, that would be a dead giveaway. Unfortunately, we live in bizarro world now, where up is down, right is left, wet is dry, and to these ass hats, it doesn’t matter to them what is between their legs.

Gender is not a social construct, wearing heels has nothing to do with it. Gender is biological reality that cannot be changed mentally or physically.
