Road Trip: Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma

tinker3

Tinker Air Force Base is a major United States Air Force base, with tenant U.S. Navy and other Department of Defense missions, located geographically in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

The base, originally known as Midwest Air Depot, is named in honor of Oklahoma native Major General Clarence L. Tinker, the first Native American Major General.

Tinker is the headquarters of the Air Force Materiel Command's (AFMC) Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center (OC-ALC), which is the worldwide manager for a wide range of aircraft, engines, missiles, software and avionics and accessories components. The host unit at Tinker is the 72d Air Base Wing (72 ABW) which provides services and support for the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center and its tenant organizations.

The Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex is the largest air logistics center in the Air Force Materiel Command. It provides depot maintenance, product support, services and supply chain management, and information support for 31 weapon systems, 10 commands, 93 Air Force bases and 46 foreign nations. It is the contracting office for the Air Force's Contract Field Teams program.

tinker4

From the initial planned site of 960 acres in March 1941, Tinker's physical plant has become by standards a "mega-facility." Today, the base is made up of 5,500 acres with 460 buildings containing 19M+square feet of floor space, including 136 acres of indoor maintenance area and 2,254 acres of ramp space, all supported by the 72nd Air Base Wing.

tinker5

The base is comparable to a city. The 72nd ABW provides essential support services for nearly 27,000 civilian and military assigned to the base and approximately 2,394 contractors, 18,000 dependents and more than 36,000 military retiree's and their family members in a six-county area.

The wing provides critical base functions including: security, fire protection, medical services, civil engineering, communications and supply, transportation and air field operations. The base also offers a variety of recreational and leisure activities including the Tinker Club, 18-hole golf course, picnic grounds, library, movie theater, swimming pool, fitness centers and a bowling alley.

I know there are a bunch of them, and neat to see as you drive by.

[I had to look up SJW...I’ve seen it a lot lately and had no clue what it meant. LOL]

Yeah they canned him/her in Texas once they found out about it. Should have canned the manager, too, who didn’t can him/her on the spot. I would have. Pronto. Cops went through the drive-thru and the SJW went off on them and refused to serve them.

It’s a nice park to walk around - hopefully not too hot right now. i just parked out front and walked over. Good stuff.

BTW, I was a kid riding my small cycle in an Oklahoma park way back when a Blue Angels F-4 Phantom II streaked over REAL low - probably just made a low pass at the air show (didn’t know one was going on).

It’s quite a thing when an F-4 passes just over your head (it was in front of me as I looked up) and you weren’t expecting it. He was pretty low - I just looked up and saw the streak of Blue and Yellow and heard the roar of the J-79’s - through my helmet. Didn’t know what a J-79 was at that time. So it was an introduction. This had to be 1971 or 1972, I think. Possibly 1970 but I just don’t know for sure.

Howdy, LUV.

Have a good day? Did it warm up a little or is it still pretty nippy?

So you have a connection of sorts to this base, do ya? :-)

Howdy, Kathy.

Hope you had a smooth Monday at work. FEW corrections to deal with.

BRRRR! It’s getting COLD up there!
And it appears you’ve sent a bit of it down here. LOL! Not a fun day to be outside today and I’ve had to turn on the heaters in here already tonight.

You’re very welcome. Glad I could do it. With all the copying and pasting, I had to tweak the code a bit to get it to work, but it looks ok....I guess. LOL! Lauren would know for sure.

Indeed, both of them should have been canned! I remember reading about that and wondering how on earth that could even happen in Texas. We all [mostly] love our LEO’s!

Having an F-4 Phantom fly right over you had to be a thrill. Would be for me...even if it happened today! I love military aircraft!

Got some nice pics of one parking with my zoom lens about 30 years ago - they still let you get close.

It was a surprise to see an F-14 Tomcat parked next to an F-15 Eagle (probably a C model F-15).

This Tomcat was HUGE. Now there are just in museums. And still looking for parts in Iran. Since Iran got F-14A’s, they probably have the TF-30. Ya don’t want to yaw the nose with those at low altitude, reportedly.

It was a cool day here - low 60s - but not so nice. The wind took ALL the fun out of it. I took Churchill out for some exercise and he didn’t want to stay out long at all. The wind died down soon after sunset and tomorrow’s supposed to be a little warmer. Maybe he’ll want to stay out longer after his trip to the vet tomorrow afternoon.
Gotta get through a cold night first. It isn’t 10:00 yet and it’s already down in the mid 40s. Clear skies and low humidity could have us seeing 30s before morning. brrrr!
