The U.S. needs military officers who are skilled and intellectually curious and predisposed to challenging groupthink. Correspondingly, the Army shouldn't overreact in punishing 2nd Lt. Spenser Rapone for his apparent endorsement of communism.

I remember the DI Hightower. He invited a trooper from Ohio to go for a march in the woods....just the two of them. Now, Hightower shared many features with Shaquille (size, color, humor...big fella). The trooper, a bully football player from Ohio, came back from that march a changed person. He just wanted to get through basic and go home.

I believe he should be hung and left for the buzzards at the entry gate to West Point.
He was beyond that point since he was an Army enlistee. He would have had to get a recommendation from his company commander.....That's how a friend of mine's son got into the Academy.
Options for Rapone:
1) Attention whore in the worst way;
2) Deranged;
3) Do-it-yourself agent-provocateur;
4) Wants to draw attention to communist subversion at the USMA, real or imagined;
5) Instead of resigning quietly, seeks public humiliation for himself or someone he wants to punish (parents?).
6) All of the above.
Options for Rogan:
1) Dumbass.
2) All of the above.

I've only had two troops in my 20 year career that fell into this category but they are out there and they need to be dealt with before they get good soldiers killed.

Oh that will work just fine. This idiot obviosly was never in the military.However, during the Obama reign of terror i wish more military officers would have stood up against the outrages of ending don’t ask don’t tell, trannies in uniform, “green” energy for USN vessels, ROE’s etc.
How can someone like this get through West Point? He had to have told his classmates about his anti-American Sentiments and the honor code would require them to report it. Violation of the honor code is grounds for disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal.
How does someone like this get a security clearance? Do you want someone like this leading men in combat? Would you put him in charge of a section of the Korean DMZ when his sentiments are obviously for the other side?
He needs to be discharged. I would never, ever trust him after his deception. He should repay the military for his education. He received it under false pretenses. He took a vow to support and defend the Constitution and honor and obey the superiors appointed over him.
I spent 22 years on active duty. Even criticizing the Commander and Chief while in uniform was grounds for disciplinary action under the UCMJ. One bad apple like this can destroy a combat unit.
Take him to Camp Lejeune and send him out into the boonies with a platoon of gung-ho Marines.
Remember, guys, this is now a legal issue, and we need to look at it as such.
“Communism” is a political belief system. We do not restrict any member’s beliefs nor the expression of those beliefs, regardless of how abhorrent they are to us.
Had he expressed support for a Communist COUNTRY, as opposed to Communism as a political belief, he would be in trouble there, as he would be had he attended any CPUSA event and not disclosed it (because they are on a subversive list).
But like OJ spend 9 years in Slammeramma for a minor property crime, (in reality because the world knew he skated on the killings,) there is plenty in this SOBs statement conduct re: superiors, (Art. 88, 133, 134) to put him away for a long time.... and the USDB is NOT a nice place.
Rip the rank off him, break his sword, slap him across the fave...and escort him to the front gate.

There are hundreds if not thousands more like him. Maybe not homosexual looking. But their loyalty is not to the Constitution. Their loyalty was to a person who is an agnostic or atheist communist. Their cause was to change America into a religion-less, equal outcome utopia. Eight years of this. Folks wonder why we have ships with gashes in them now. Look at Army basic training. It is a joke. Go on Facebook and look at photos of basic training for the last five years. (If you are a Marine, you might want to take an anti-anxiety pill before you see how these folks hold their weapons among other things.)
